| Someone should school Cam Newton on what's funny |
| Cam Newton thought it was funny. A good chunk of America disagreed. During his weekly news conference Wednesday, the Carolina Panthers' quarterback took a question about routes from Charlotte Observer beat writer Jourdan Rodrigue. Newton smiled, laughed and said: "It's funny to hear a female talk about routes. Like, it's funny." Rodrigue's question was reasonable. Newton's response was sexist. His team and the NFL said his comments were not OK. Dannon Yogurt cut ties with him Thursday. Sports reporters — male and female — defended Rodrigue (though there were some people in Newton's court, too). USA TODAY Sports' Nancy Armour is fed up with how female sports reporters are treated: "It's exhausting. It's infuriating. It's offensive. And it's high time it stops." |
| For many Las Vegas shooting survivors, the struggle is just beginning |
| Gunman Stephen Paddock may have had targets outside of Las Vegas in his sights. Paddock had booked rooms in a Chicago hotel room facing the Lollapalooza music festiva l in August, a law enforcement official told USA TODAY Thursday. About 100,000 people turned out each day of that festival and former president Barack Obama's daughter, Malia, was among them. Paddock never checked into the Chicago hotel. A federal law enforcement official said the gunman also expressed interest in Boston in the past several months. But Paddock chose Las Vegas for his rampage. Most of the survivors from Sunday night's massacre will be forever changed and a high percentage could face a life-long struggle with post-traumatic stress disorder. |
| Why can't companies like Netflix 'fess up when they raise prices? |
| One monthly bill is about to get heftier for nearly 53 million people. Streaming phenom Netflix is raising prices , with its most popular offering rising $1 to $10.99 a month. Netflix's excuse: Prices go up "from time to time" to pay for "more exclusive TV shows and movies," "new product features" and to "improve the overall Netflix experience." With about 8 million more subscribers since it last raised prices two years ago, the company's head honchos probably reckon folks will go ahead and ante up. And they're probably right. |
| Voters appear able to separate a struggling Trump from a soaring economy |
| They hate what he's doing. They love what's happening with the economy under his watch. That's the contradictory bottom line of a USA TODAY/Suffolk University poll that asked 1,000 registered voters about President Trump, Congress and other hot topics. While 53% are buoyant about the economy, Trump's favorability rating stands at a miserable 34%. However, that's double the 17% who think Congress is doing a good job. The only thing that appears to be growing in popularity is Obamacare, with six in 10 saying the health care law should be left pretty much alone — an increase since June. But that doesn't mean Trump and pals are likely to give up on pushing legislation to "repeal and replace" the Affordable Care Act. |
