A chilling text before a fatal crash

We're learning more about a fatal limo crash, watching a new hurricane and sympathizing with a Kentucky man named Brett Kavanagh. ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌

In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue. In 2018, Columbus, Ohio, decided not to celebrate.

Welcome to The Short List. I'm editor Mary Nahorniak, bringing you the day's top news from USA TODAY.

But first, how healthy is sparkling water? The bubbly stuff is about as hydrating as regular water, yet exponentially more delicious. So crack another La Croix and let us know how you pronounce it.

Here are the headlines.

Victim sent chilling text about limo's 'terrible condition'

When a woman sent a text on Saturday that her limo was in "terrible condition," it became tragically prescient. The limo in the crash that killed 20 people in upstate New York had failed inspection last month and the driver didn't have the right license, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Monday. It was "not supposed to be on the road," he said. Victim Erin McGowan, 34,  sent the foreboding text just before the crash. The vehicle was a last-minute replacement after a bus hired to shuttle friends celebrating a birthday broke down. Among those killed were four sisters, three of whom died with their husbands. How did it happen? Here's everything we know.

Keep an eye on Michael

We're deep in hurricane season, and the next one to track is Michael. It was upgraded to a Category 1 storm on Monday and is heading for landfall midweek as a "major" hurricane along the Gulf Coast. How major is major? That would be a Category 3, 4 or 5 hurricane, which has winds of at least 111 mph. If the forecast is correct, it would be only the 11th major hurricane to hit Florida in October since records began in 1851. A storm surge of up to 12 feet is forecast for a large section of the Florida coast.

A rare, polio-like disease is on the rise

The symptoms sound chillingly similar to polio: Weak limbs, difficulty swallowing and, in some cases, paralysis. Acute flaccid myelitis is a rare but potentially severe condition that mainly affects children , and it's on the rise, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Between August 2014 and August 2018, the CDC tracked 362 cases of AFM. The Minnesota Department of Health recently announced six cases, including 7-year-old Quinton Hill. Quinton has lost a lot of the strength in his left arm and has some weakness in his legs and neck. "Just to have him lift his head up a bit more to look to the side was a blessing because we didn't know if that was coming back," said his dad, James Hill. There is no specific treatment for the disease, but doctors know that it hits the nervous system by traveling through the spinal cord.

We leave you with these two updates from Washington

Rod Rosenstein is safe. President Donald Trump said Monday he has no intention of firing the deputy attorney general, ending lingering uncertainty.

Brett Kavanaugh is on the bench. These are the first cases the newest Supreme Court justice will hear, starting Tuesday. Also: It's been "a crazy couple of weeks" for his name-doppelgänger, Brett Kavanagh (no "u"), a 27-year-old Kentucky guy.
