Loughlin's husband: 'I had to work the system' |
| Fashion designer Mossimo Giannulli, husband of actress Lori Loughlin, told his accountant that he had to "work the system" to get his older daughter accepted into the University of Southern California as a fake crew recruit, prosecutors alleged in a new indictment this week. "Good news my daughter... is in (U)SC ... bad is I had to work the system," Giannulli wrote in a 2017 email to his accountant in which he forwarded a $200,000 invoice from Rick Singer, the mastermind of a college admissions scheme. According to the indictment, Singer also asked Giannulli for a photo of his daughter on a rowing machine "like a real athlete." Giannulli replied back. "Will get all." The new evidence brought additional bribery charges against the celebrity couple. |

In the heart of fire season, 200,000 Californians are in the dark |
| Almost 200,000 homes and businesses across California were without power Thursday and utility companies warned that hundreds of thousands more could be in the dark soon as high winds fueled fast-growing wildfires. In Sonoma County, the fast-growing Kincade Fire flared up Thursday and within hours covered more than 15 square miles, prompting evacuations. The Sonoma County Sheriff's Office warned several communities to "leave immediately." At a noon news conference, fire officials said the blaze is expected to grow beyond its currently estimated 10,000 acres, even though winds had died down. Containment was at zero but no injuries had been reported. |

What's the dispute between Hillary Clinton and Tulsi Gabbard about? |
| Hillary Clinton caused quite the political firestorm last week after talking about Rep. Tulsi Gabbard's presidential campaign on a podcast. Clinton's comments were initially incorrectly reported (emphasis on incorrectly) as her saying Russians appeared to be "grooming" Gabbard as a potential third-party presidential candidate. But Clinton had actually suggested that it was the Republicans who were "grooming" Gabbard. Several outlets picked up on the story with the incorrect quote, prompting a feisty response from Gabbard and other candidates on Twitter. The problem is, however, that most of the drama comes from the misquote of Clinton's remarks. And that's the tea. |

Dozens of bodies found in England were Chinese nationals |
| The 39 people found dead in the back of a truck in England were Chinese nationals, police said Thursday. The truck and its trailer, which are believed to have entered the country separately, were discovered in Grays on Wednesday. Eight of the dead are women, including a young woman police initially said was a teenager, and 31 are men, police said. Essex Police said 25-year-old truck driver Mo Robinson from Northern Ireland was arrested after the bodies were found and is still being held by police. |

Rest in peace, Rep. Elijah Cummings |
| Capitol Hill was in mourning Thursday after Rep. Elijah Cummings, a 23-year member of Congress, died due to complications from ongoing health problems. Cummings, 68, was known as a fierce and fiery advocate for civil rights who passionately defended democratic principles. Former Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, along with former first lady Michelle Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, plan to attend Cummings' funeral in Baltimore on Friday. As the nation bids farewell to the Maryland Democrat, let's look back at some of the moments that helped define Cummings' distinguished political career. |
