New Zealand volcano eruption: At least 5 killed

A volcanic eruption in New Zealand killed at least five people and left many more presumed dead Monday on a small volcanic island off the country's northeast coast that is popular with tourists. Police said White Island, also called Whakaari, was too dangerous for search-and-rescue crews. Multiple reconnaissance aircraft flew over since the eruption Monday afternoon, and "no signs of life have been seen," police said.  Videos and photos shared on social media show massive plumes of smoke coming off the island.

'It's a disgrace, it's a hoax,' Trump says of impeachment hearings

House Democrats could prepare formal charges to impeach President Donald Trump this week as lawmakers edge closer to a possible vote and the president rallies his base of support. A lawyer for House Democrats called Trump "a clear and present danger" to the 2020 election at a hearing Monday to sum up findings of their investigation  into accusations that the president pressured Ukraine to investigate political rival Joe Biden. At the combative hearing of the House Judiciary Committee, a Republican lawyer countered that the allegations against Trump were riddled with "hearsay, presumptions and speculation," saying that pursuing impeachment would be "baloney." Taking questions at the White House, Trump said he "watched a little" of the impeachment hearing but didn't like what he saw. "It's a disgrace, it's a hoax," he said.

Not one female director got a Golden Globe nomination

It was a crazy day in the neighborhood when the Golden Globes nominations landed  Monday. "Marriage Story" made a big move toward Oscar glory,  leading the Golden Globe Awards field with six nominations. The tear-jerking Netflix divorce film will compete for the top prize (best drama) alongside "The Irishman" (which picked up five nominations), "1917," "The Two Popes" and "Joker." Did the Hollywood Foreign Press Association forget about Matt Damon? And literally every female director? Yep

The FBI's wiretap of a Trump campaign aide was riddled with errors

Seventeen inaccuracies. That's how many errors the Justice Department uncovered in the FBI's controversial wiretap of a Trump campaign adviser.  The massive report, released Monday, found more than a dozen inaccuracies in the FBI's warrant applications, effectively inflating the justification to wiretap former foreign policy adviser Carter Page. The report, nevertheless, counters claims by the president and his allies that political bias played a role in the FBI's decision to investigate members of the Trump campaign for possible coordination with Russia. Trump said the report shows an "attempted overthrow" of the government

Steve Harvey and the Miss Universe teleprompter just don't get along

The Miss Universe 2019 pageant was Sunday, when 90 women competed for the title that went to Zozibini Tunzi of South Africa. Host Steve Harvey was there, too, making things awkward as usual (Remember when he announced the wrong winner entirely? ). This time, Harvey introduced the winner of the national costume contest, and after showing a photo of Miss Philippines Gazini Ganados in costume and declaring her the winner, Harvey said, "This is it right here." He then introduced the contestant beside him, who was very clearly in a different outfit than the one that was just shown on screen. "It's not Philippines, it's Malaysia," contestant Shweta Sekhon said firmly. Miss Philippines was the one to win the costume competition.
