The Short List

Saturday, February 27

Happy Saturday, friends of the Short List! We hope you are well cared for and are "getting more confident every day" – just like a certain sheep we know.

Our long reads this weekend tackle a topic that impacts the entire nation: President Joe Biden's $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief package. Passed by the House early Saturday, the package includes $1,400 checks for many Americans, $350 billion to help cash-strapped state and local governments, and a controversial provision to increase of the federal hourly minimum wage from $7.25 to $15 by 2025. Now it heads to the Senate.

With the pandemic still months away from exiting the scene, most everyone would agree there's a need for some form of federal aid. On the other hand, $1.9 trillion ain't exactly chump change. Can the nation afford it? Is there a better way to use these enormous resources?

We hope we can help increase your understanding on this important issue.

We asked Americans how they would spend $1,400. Here's what they said.
