Happy Monday, Daily Money readers. Jayme Deerwester back with you after a beautiful weekend spent on – and in – the water. Still haven't gotten around to planting my herbs, though. Oh well, there's always next weekend!

JetBlue makes third offer for Spirit

Here we go again.

JetBlue is attempting to buy budget carrier Spirit Airlines for the third time – but its latest offer is a hostile takeover bid. Now it's is appealing directly to Spirit shareholders, urging them to reject its planned $2.9 billion merger with Frontier.

In its previous two rejections, Spirit argued that it believes antitrust regulators are unlikely to approve a deal with JetBlue, citing that carrier's alliance with American Airlines in the Northeast and a government lawsuit seeking to block it.

Shareholders of Spirit Airlines Inc. are scheduled to vote June 10 on the Frontier bid favored by the Spirit board.

JetBlue on Monday offered $30 a share in cash for each share held by Spirit investors, but said it's open to paying its initial offer price of $33 a share if the board at Spirit enters talks and provides data that JetBlue has requested.

Spirit shares jumped around 10% in early trading Monday following the news.

Seniors could be getting 2nd Social Security raise in 2 years

It looks like there'll be at least one silver lining to skyrocketing inflation: seniors will be getting a nice raise next year.

The roughly 70 million people – retirees, disabled people and others – who rely on Social Security could receive an 8.6% cost-of-living adjustment, or COLA, next year, according to an estimate from Mary Johnson, a policy analyst for the Senior Citizen League, an advocacy group.

For the average retiree who got a monthly check of $1,657 this year, the bump would mean an additional $142.50 a month in 2023, boosting the typical payment to $1,800.

"It will be a lifesaver," Johnson says. "It means they can buy an extra week of groceries. They'll be able to afford to heat their home for the next month. People will be able to pay their electric bill."

🎧 Mood music 🎧

JetBlue's ongoing attempt to buy Spirit Airlines got me thinking about the Blondie classic "One Way or Another." Will Spirit find a way to give its jilted suitor the slip for good?

"One way or another, I'm going to find ya, I'm gonna get ya, get ya, get ya, get ya. One way or another I'm going to win ya. I'm gonna get ya, get ya, get ya, get ya."
