The Daily Money: When will inflation go away?

Inflation is hot. Don't expect it to cool down quickly, especially after August's surprise CPI report. ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌

The Daily Money

Thursday, September 15

Happy Friday eve! I'm Elisabeth Buchwald and here is my Daily Money debut (please clap).

Planes and automobiles went head to head with one another this summer over who could make more nasty headlines. Now trains are rising to the ranks.

Yesterday, Amtrak preemptively canceled all long-distance trains scheduled for today due to a potential freight rail strike. But just in the nick of time, railway unions were able to reach a tentative agreement. Amtrak is now scrambling to reschedule the canceled trains.

Inflation just won't take a hint

Inflation is like the one guest at a dinner party who just doesn't seem to pick up the hint that you're trying to wrap up the evening, clean up and go to sleep. And unfortunately, this unwanted guest is looking like it'll overstay its visit for an even longer span of time than economists originally anticipated.

Case in point: After peaking at a 40-year high of 9.1% in June, consumer price increases eased to 8.5% in July and were expected to fall significantly for the rest of the year and beyond. But Tuesday's CPI report showed that the 12-month change in prices declined to 8.3% in August, instead of the 8% projected.

What I'm watching

I tend to be an early-to-bed, early-to-rise person but yesterday wasn't one of those days. I couldn't resist watching the season five premiere of The Handmaid's Tale last night. It did not disappoint.
