A Day of Mourning instead of thanks |
For more than 50 years, Native American communities have gathered in Plymouth, Massachusetts, on the third Thursday of November. But it isn't to carve turkey and celebrate the Pilgrims' first harvest. Instead, they will march and hear from Indigenous people from around the world for the National Day of Mourning. |

How we got to Thanksgiving: The first Thanksgiving holiday was recognized nationally in 1863 when President Abraham Lincoln designated the final Thursday of November to be "Thanksgiving." It was observed on that day until 1939 when President Franklin Roosevelt solidified it as the fourth Thursday, hoping to increase retail sales during the Great Depression. |
