Peace talks on the Russia-Ukraine conflict took place at the White House. An intense hurricane is expected to cause rough surf along the eastern coast of the United States. And a major news network is getting a new look. |
π Hello! Rebecca Morin here. Let's jump into this week with Monday's news! | President Donald Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European allies Monday afternoon to discuss a potential peace deal with Russia. Trump held an hourslong meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday, where Trump shifted his position on a Ukraine ceasefire to align with that of the Russian president. Zelenskyy, who had a disastrous meeting with Trump in February, said their meeting Monday was "good." | Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is greeted by President Donald Trump upon his arrival at the White House. The storm itself, which is the first hurricane formed in the Atlantic this season, is not forecast to hit the mainland. However, people fled North Carolina's Outer Banks after a mandatory evacuation was put in place because of possible flooding and tropical storm conditions. Erin strengthened into a Category 4 storm with maximum sustained winds of 140 mph, according to an advisory Monday afternoon from the National Hurricane Center. |
In its path: Erin formed into a hurricane from a tropical storm on Friday and quickly intensified into a hurricane. Over the weekend, the storm lashed Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, causing tens of thousands of power outages, flight cancellations and closures across both islands. No deaths were reported. π Follow the latest updates from the storm. | A house in Guayama, Puerto Rico, is partially flooded as Hurricane Erin leaves the region on Sunday. Foul play not ruled out for missing baby | A California mother said her 7-month-old baby was kidnapped outside a store. Officials said they have not ruled out foul play in the child's disappearance. The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department said it has interviewed Jake and Rebecca Haro, the parents of the baby, Emmanuel. "During those interviews, Rebecca was confronted with inconsistencies in her initial statement and declined to continue with the interview," the sheriff's department said. |
What happened? According to a release from the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, Rebecca Haro on Aug. 14 said her infant was kidnapped outside a store Yucaipa, California, 10 miles east of San Bernardino. She was changing her son's diaper in her car when a man assaulted her and knocked her unconscious. When she regained consciousness, her son was gone, she said. π What to know about the ongoing investigation. | It's time for a makeover. MSNBC, home of popular left-leaning hosts like Rachel Maddow and Jen Psaki, will adopt a new name and logo as it becomes part of a new company, Versant, to be spun off from NBCUniversal in late 2025. Versant, which includes USA Network, Syfy, CNBC and Golf Channel alongside MSNBC, will build an "individual identity" for those brands, according to a staff memo from CEO Mark Lazarus on Monday. MSNBC, perhaps the biggest name in the exodus, will rebrand as My Source News Opinion World, or MS NOW. NBC's iconic peacock logo will no longer be used for the cable news network, either. π It's the latest shakeup in a tumultuous season for cable news. | MSNBC will rebrand as MS NOW.
