The Short List

Wed Oct 15 2025

👋🏼 Happy Wednesday! I'm Phaedra Trethan, and I'm ready to try the new Snickers but not so sure about spicy Skittles.

In Wednesday's news:

Overdose deaths affect the whole family, including younger siblings.
The Supreme Court weighs a key part of the Voting Rights Act.
'Subu' Vedam served more than 40 years for a crime he didn't commit. Instead of being released, he was taken into custody by immigration agents.

But first: The Wildlife Photographs of the Year are in, and they are spectacular.

Siblings grieve, too

The opioid crisis has robbed countless parents of their children — and countless children of their parents. Fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid, killed thousands of people nationwide. And while the pain of parents is immeasurable, and the loss children feel is incalculable, the siblings of overdose victims are left with grief, trauma and questions, too. How younger siblings are managing their grief with the help of a camp just for them.

Redistricting on the docket

⚖️ The nation's highest court is weighing a key provision of the Voting Rights Act, one that is aimed at preventing racial discrimination. The Supreme Court on Wednesday spent hours debating whether electoral districts can be created to protect minorities' voting rights without discriminating against others.

Exonerated, but not free

Earlier this month, Subramanyam "Subu" Vedam was ordered released after being exonerated for a murder he did not commit. But before he was freed from a Pennsylvania prison, Vedam, who was born in India but came to the U.S. with his parents at 9 months old, was taken into custody by immigration agents. Now, the 64-year-old's family and other supporters worry he'll be sent back to a country where he has only "distant connections."

Why he's set to be deported, and why his supporters are hoping to have that order overturned.

The 'old guys' at QB face off Thursday

🏈 🏈 🏈 While this 50-something newsletter writer would never consider a couple of guys in their 40s old, by NFL standards Aaron Rodgers (at 42) and Joe Flacco (40) are, well, kinda ancient.

But as two of the oldest players in the NFL prepare to face off against each other Thursday night, Rodgers, the Pittsburgh Steelers QB, said facing Flacco and the Cincinnati Bengals is " great for all the old guys."

The NFL's trade deadline is approaching. Who might be on the move?
