Food aid recipients hit with another obstacle after shutdown |
After millions of Americans' food aid was threatened and then temporarily halted due to the shutdown, those who rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) are facing new headwinds from the government. |
Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins told news outlets last week that it's part of a planned overhaul of the program in an effort to reduce "fraud." |
SNAP provides cash cards to approximately 12% of Americans for a limited time to help purchase basic food items if their income is at or below 130% of the poverty line. A large number of recipients are elderly, disabled or children. |
