@KathrynPlmr

Hello and happy Tuesday. Welcome to OnPolitics. Kathryn Palmer here. Looking forward to starting the new Ken Burns documentary after work today! I have a feeling it'll really humble me about my knowledge on the American Revolution. Let's get into today's news.

Pressure builds ahead of House vote on Epstein files

Today is vote day at the House on one of the most closely watched and debated pieces of legislation since the shutdown ended: the measure to release the Jeffrey Epstein files.

House Speaker Mike Johnson  defended the president today for not ordering the Department of Justice to release the Epstein files outright, which the House bill attempts to do. It would also require Senate approval and the president's signature to become effective.

As lawmakers prepare for an afternoon vote, repercussions of another Epstein-related release are still unfolding.

UN backs Trump's Gaza peace plan

The United Nations backed Trump's 20-point plan for Gaza on Monday.

It's part of an effort to convert a fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas to a durable peace that includes rebuilding the Palestinian enclave.

The resolution supports "phase two" of Trump's Gaza plan, but many details about the plan remain unclear. Hamas quickly rejected aspects of the resolution, and there are dissenting voices in Israel. Among its stickier points is the establishment of a coalition of international troops to ensure Gaza is demilitarized.

Food aid recipients hit with another obstacle after shutdown

After millions of Americans' food aid was threatened and then temporarily halted due to the shutdown, those who rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) are facing new headwinds from the government.

Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins told news outlets last week that it's part of a planned overhaul of the program in an effort to reduce "fraud."

SNAP provides cash cards to approximately 12% of Americans for a limited time to help purchase basic food items if their income is at or below 130% of the poverty line. A large number of recipients are elderly, disabled or children.
