Welcome to the Daily Briefing. Here's what's breaking this morning:

DOJ will release nearly 50,000 removed Epstein files.
A suspect in three women's killings was arrested after a multistate manhunt.
Trump honored Lionel Messi and Inter Miami in a White House visit.

Nicole Fallert here, listening to Harry Styles' new album. Up first Friday is the news of Kristi Noem's replacement. Don't forget to "spring forward" this weekend!

Who is Markwayne Mullin?

Kristi Noem will be replaced as the Secretary of Homeland Security by Oklahoma Sen. Markwayne Mullin following a slew of controversies, including "eye-popping" prices for warehouse detention centers to defending the killing of U.S. citizens by federal agents.

In a social media post, President Donald Trump called Mullin, a Republican, a "MAGA Warrior," referencing his professional mixed martial arts career and his identity as the  only Native American in the Senate.

Trump's ouster of his top immigration enforcement official adds to the turmoil around the administration's signature second-term initiative, again putting the spotlight on a deportation push that has faced setbacks amid intense backlash.

More news to know now

Afghan allies face 'hell' amid Iran war. More than a thousand Afghan refugees at a U.S.-run camp in Qatar are in limbo. They can no longer return to Afghanistan, but the new war in the Middle East launched by the Trump administration and Israel has plunged them into terror and confusion.
The virus without a vaccine: Cases of human metapneumovirus, or HMPV, are hitting certain states. HPMV can cause upper and lower respiratory disease, and currently there is no vaccine to prevent it and no specific antiviral therapy to treat it.
Don't fall for "false spring." Warmer temperatures will be short-lived, as  a dreaded polar vortex is in the offing for later next week.

Baseball

Homerun!

With each passing iteration, the World Baseball Classic  gets bigger and bigger. The 2026 World Baseball Classic kicks into full gear Friday with eight games. Team USA starts its campaign facing Brazil in Houston at 8 p.m. ET, hoping for another deep run after finishing runner-up in 2023. The global tournament comes as President Trump said baseball is "not as hot" right now.
