@KathrynPlmr

Hello readers, and happy Monday. Welcome back to On Politics. Kathryn Palmer here. It may be Spring Break season (Congress is on recess until next week), but there's little rest for folks on the White House and Supreme Court beats. So here's the latest.

Iran responds to Trump's profanity-laced threat

On the morning of Easter Sunday, Trump threatened to rain "hell" on Iran's power plants and bridges if Tehran didn't reopen the Strait of Hormuz by Tuesday evening. The president's language on social media sparked immediate blowback and prompted concerns that targeting of civilian infrastructure could constitute a war crime.

Today, Iranian state media reported the regime has rejected an overnight ceasefire proposal. Striking the same defiant tone as the last time the U.S. president issued an ultimatum in late March, Tehran demanded the United States permanently end the war, lift sanctions and agree to a protocol for safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz.

Speaking at the annual Easter Egg Roll at the White House this morning, Trump said Iran has been "obliterated," but officials there do not want to admit defeat. He doubled down on his threats to launch targeted strikes tomorrow.

Supreme Court clears way for DOJ to wipe Steve Bannon's conviction

The Supreme Court today paved the way for the Trump administration to wipe away longtime Trump ally Steve Bannon’s conviction for contempt of Congress. Bannon, now a host of a popular MAGA podcast, was convicted in 2022 for defying a subpoena from the House committee that investigated the Capitol attack on Jan. 6, 2021. The firebrand commentator and former Trump aide already served his four-month prison sentence, after the Supreme Court in 2024 rejected his bid to remain free while he appealed.

At the request of the Department of Justice, the Supreme Court today effectively erased the lower court rulings upholding the conviction. The case has now been sent back to a district court, where DOJ lawyers have asked for a dismissal.

White House hosts annual Easter egg roll

The White House today held one of its most beloved kid-friendly annual events (second only, perhaps, to the Turkey pardon). Families with children under 13 were selected through an online lottery to attend the 148th White House Easter Egg Roll , joining the president, first lady Melania Trump, White House staff and their families on the South Lawn. USA TODAY's Karissa Waddick observed a surreal split screen at the event, as Trump spoke to reporters about his threats to bomb Iran tomorrow in front of a backdrop of pastels, garden games and frolicking children.

The celebrations featured 30,000 real eggs from Braswell Family Farms in Nashville, North Carolina, and 150 live chicks. Like their November turkey pardon counterparts, the hatchlings were treated to a lavish stay at the Willard Intercontinental Hotel the night before. It was unclear if they took advantage of their suite's marble-lined soaking tub.
