Democratic Gov. John Bel Edwards wins reelection in Louisiana |
Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards won a second term Saturday despite an all-out effort by President Donald Trump to flip the seat to the Republican column. Edwards narrowly beat wealthy Republican businessman Eddie Rispone, who invested more than $14 million of his own money to finance his campaign and tied himself to Trump from start to finish. Trump headlined three Louisiana rallies to oust Edwards, telling Louisiana voters the race was a symbolic referendum on his presidency. But in the end, Trump's coattails weren't long enough to carry Rispone across the finish line. As a Democrat, Edwards is an anomaly both in the South and in Louisiana as he is the only Democrat to hold statewide office. |
Colin Kaepernick ditches NFL workout, hosts independent one |
There was a hitch in Colin Kaepernick's planned NFL workout Saturday in Atlanta. The showcase for the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback moved from the original location at the Atlanta Falcons' practice facility after Kaepernick and his representatives said the NFL's process was not "legitimate." They said their desire for a "transparent and open process" was the reason behind the change. The NFL said in a statement Saturday that Kaepernick informed the league he wasn't attending the workout a half hour before the scheduled start time, the same time his representatives alerted the public. The workout, attended by at least a few NFL scouts, was streamed live. Kaepernick has not appeared in an NFL game since 2016. |

Hong Kong protesters battle police for control of university |
Hong Kong students armed with bows and arrows battled police firing tear gas and blasting water cannons as escalating violence paralyzed the educational system of the beleaguered semi-autonomous Chinese territory. Late Sunday, police used loudspeakers to order the evacuation of Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Many protesters stayed behind, some setting fires to block the advance of riot police. Police said dozens had been arrested. The protest was the final holdout from a series of demonstrations that shut down several major universities last week. The conflict stems from a government extradition proposal earlier this year that would have allowed suspects in Hong Kong to be sent to mainland China, which was later withdrawn. |

Santa Clarita mourns victims of Saugus school shooting |
As investigators continue to search for a motive behind the deadly shooting at a Southern California high school Thursday morning, the community of Santa Clarita is coming together to remember the children it lost. Dominic Michael Blackwell, 14, and Gracie Anne Muehlberger, 15, died Thursday when another student opened fire at Saugus High School, injuring three others. The 16-year-old suspect, who shot himself, died Friday night. GoFundMe pages that appeared to be created by family members of the two students killed had each raised tens of thousands of dollars by Saturday. On Friday, the city of Santa Clarita launched a Saugus Strong website, which provides the community resources and encourages viewers worldwide to submit messages of love and support. By Saturday morning, the website had received more than 200 messages from across six continents. A vigil, "Saugus Strong," is scheduled for 7 p.m. PT Sunday. |
