The Daily Money

Monday, January 10

Good morning, Daily Money readers. Jayme Deerwester back with you as we hop back on the treadmill for another week.

Unfortunately, we have to start out the week with another round of food recalls and a warning to check your fridge and pantry for affected products:

Dole has recalled more prepackaged salad mixes sold at Walmart, Kroger, Aldi, H-E-B for listeria risk.
Ground beef sold at Walmart, Kroger, Albertsons and WinCo Foods stores under store-brand labels is being recalled for possible E. coli contamination.
And beef sticks sold at Walmart other retailers nationwide were recalled because of misbranding and failure to declare milk on its product label.

And if, like me, you were wondering what the difference is between beef jerky and beef sticks, beef jerky is dehydrated into strips, while beef sticks consist of chopped and mixed meat that is pushed into a casing. Thank you, PeoplesChoiceBeefJerky.com, for that bit of "today, I learned" education.

On to today's ...

DAILY INSIGHT. 💡 U.S. payrolls are just 2.4% short of their pre-pandemic peak. In April 2020, they were 14.7% below that level. So which industries did all the hiring and which are still suffering?

"The winners are easy to see," says Dean Baker, co-founder of the Center for Economic and Policy Research. "They all center around people buying stuff at home."

Courier and warehouse jobs are well above their pre-crisis marks. The losers? Industries that got pummeled when Americans halted, or sharply cut back, traveling, going to restaurants, stores and other in-person activities.

MOOD MUSIC. The link between today's lyrical inspiration, the Meat Puppets' "Oh, Me," and the news of the day actually comes from the band name rather than the song itself. The song, which got wide exposure when Nirvana covered it on MTV's "Unplugged" in 1993 goes,  "I can't see the end of me. My whole expanse, I cannot see. I formulate infinity.  And store it deep inside of me."
