All of Puerto Rico without power as Hurricane Fiona makes landfall

Hurricane Fiona made landfall on Puerto Rico's southwest coast on Sunday after causing an island-wide power blackout and threatening to dump "historic" levels of rain. Fiona, a Category 1 storm, was expected to unleash life-threatening rainfall and dangerous mudslides, and "catastrophic flooding" was likely across Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, the National Hurricane Center said. Fiona made landfall with maximum sustained winds of 85 mph, the hurricane center said, and it was moving to the northwest at 9 mph. Because of dangerous weather conditions, officials said it could take several days to fully restore power.

State of disaster declared in Alaska: Gov. Mike Dunleavy declared a state of disaster Saturday as a powerful storm threatens huge swaths of the state's vast and sparsely populated western coastline. Towns are facing strong winds and flooding, and bracing for possible power outages caused by a storm forecasters are calling one of the worst in the state's recent history.

UK holds moment of silence on eve of Queen Elizabeth's funeral

People across Britain paused for a minute of silence Sunday evening in memory of Queen Elizabeth II on the eve of her funeral. In Westminster Hall, where the queen is lying in state, the line of mourners halted for 60 seconds. The number of mourners continued to grow over the weekend, with a line stretching at least 5 miles. On Saturday, U.S. President Joe Biden and other world leaders and dignitaries flew into London ahead of the queen's state funeral on Monday. President Biden signed the queen's official condolence book and attended a reception at Buckingham Palace hosted by King Charles III on Sunday.

Massachusetts seeks human trafficking probe targeting Florida Gov. DeSantis

After Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis boasted of sending about 50 Venezuelan migrants to Martha's Vineyard to shine a national spotlight on immigration issues, authorities in Massachusetts said Sunday that they have asked the Department of Justice to investigate "these inhumane acts" with a federal human trafficking probe. The migrants were picked up in Texas, but DeSantis said the flights were part of a $12 million Florida program to transport undocumented immigrants to so-called sanctuary destinations and denied claims that the migrants were duped into taking the flights. DeSantis and Texas Gov. Gregg Abbott have also sent migrants to other cities, including New York, Chicago, and Washington, D.C., where some were dropped off outside the home of Vice President Kamala Harris.

8 million ordered to evacuate as Typhoon Nanmadol slams Japan

More than 8 million people in southern and western Japan were ordered to evacuate Sunday as Typhoon Nanmadol roars across the island nation with historic wind and waves. More than 330,000 people in Kagoshima, Miyazaki and Oita prefectures were issued a level 5 alert, the highest on Japan's disaster warning scale, officials said, and nearly 8 million people affected by a level 4 alert were ordered to evacuate in other regions. Some areas saw more than 15 inches of rain in the 24 hours through Sunday afternoon. Wind speeds of almost 115 mph were reported as the storm slowly rolled northward over Japan, sending power lines tumbling and leaving hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses in the dark.
