Trump fraud trial opens in New York

Court is in session. Former President Donald Trump is the star of a fiery trial that opened in New York on Monday that could shine a light on how much money the real estate mogul turned politician is really worth. A civil trial that's expected to last three months will determine how much Trump and his companies will be penalized after a New York judge ruled he committed fraud for years while building his real estate empire. New York Attorney General Letitia James is seeking $250 million in damages. Potential witnesses include Trump, his children and former business associates. 🔎 Here's how it's all unfolding.

Senate gets a fresh face: Laphonza Butler

California Gov. Gavin Newsom will appoint Laphonza Butler to fill the U.S. Senate seat left by Dianne Feinstein, who died Friday at age 90. Butler will fill the seat until the 2024 election. Aside from being the first woman of color and mother to lead EMILY's List, an organization that helps Democratic women win elections, she was also an adviser to Vice President Kamala Harris and is a former union organizer. Butler will be the first openly LGBTQ+ person to represent California in the Senate and the first Black lesbian to openly serve in Congress. 👉 Meet Laphonza Butler.

Supreme Court dives into the drama

The Supreme Court kicked off a nine-month term Monday that will thrust the justices into partisan quagmires over guns, social media and the Biden administration's power to make decisions without Congress. But as the justices step into the ornate courtroom to hear oral arguments for the first time in months, they'll be confronting more than the usual docket full of controversies: They'll also be wrestling with persistent questions about ethics and foreign travel that polls show have undermined Americans' faith in the institution.

Lights, camera, Beyoncé!

Get in formation, Beyhive. If you missed the Renaissance World Tour live and in person, you can soon get a taste of the experience at a movie theater near you. Beyoncé, who wrapped her highly acclaimed tour on Sunday, announced Monday that a film based on the concert tour will hit the big screen Dec. 1. The movie "Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé" will showcase the Grammy-winning artist's tour stops from the first show on May 10 in Stockholm, Sweden, to the finale in Kansas City, Missouri, Oct. 1. And along with concert footage, the film will include portions of the visual album for Beyoncé's latest release, "Renaissance," and a documentary-style account of the album and tour's creation. 🍿 Here's how to get tickets.
