She's running with Walz

The pick is in. Kamala Harris picked Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate on Tuesday, thrusting the outspoken Midwestern statesman into the national spotlight while adding a key ally to her fast-moving campaign for the presidency.

What he's bringing to the table: Walz, 60, brings political acuity, suburban-and-rural appeal and progressive patriotism to a competition where all three criteria are seen as helpful for Democrats to clinch a 2024 win against the Republican ticket of former President Donald Trump and Sen. JD Vance. 👉 Here's everything we know.

Debby flooding swamps Southeast

As Tropical Storm Debby continued its dayslong crawl through the Southeast on Tuesday, coastal areas from northern Florida to the Carolinas were inundated with rainfall, leaving streets underwater as officials ordered evacuations, conducted rescues and warned of a dam that was near failure. Forecasters say the conditions were only expected to worsen this week as the storm unleashes potentially "catastrophic" flooding across the region. Debby could dump 10-20 inches of rainfall through Friday, and some areas could receive up to 30 inches, the National Weather Service said. 🌀 See the full forecast.

Stocks bounce back after manic Monday

U.S. stocks ended sharply higher on Tuesday as investors jumped back into the market a day after a dramatic sell-off, as recent comments by Federal Reserve officials eased U.S. recession worries. All major S&P 500 sectors also rose sharply. U.S. central bank policymakers pushed back against the idea that weaker-than-expected July jobs data means the economy is headed for a recession, but they also warned that the Fed will need to cut interest rates to avoid such an outcome. 📈 Read the full story.
