The Short List

👋🏼 Hi there! I'm Phaedra Trethan, and I've got my Powerball tickets ready for tonight's drawing. 🤞🏼 🍀 🧧

In Wednesday's news:

Even if I win the Powerball, I'll still be about $11.5 billion short of what it reportedly took to purchase the Los Angeles Lakers. 💰 🏀 💰
Several states held primary elections Tuesday. We bring you the biggest takeaways. 🗳️
Consumer prices ticked up again in July, and paychecks aren't keeping pace. 💸

But first: Has Amelia Earhart's plane finally been found? 👀

Lakers selling for a bucket of cash 💰 🏀 💰

$12.5 billion. That's how much Mark Walter just netted for the LA Lakers. A Trump-adjacent businessman and a former Disney CEO reportedly acquired one of sports' most storied franchises and spent a record amount of money to do so. The sale comes just two years after Walter bought the Lakers from the family of Dr. Jerry Buss, the team's late longtime owner.

The surname of one of the new owners might sound familiar. Here's why. 🧏🏻
NBA All-Star Russell Westbrook (who played for the Lakers from 2021-23) has called it a career after 18 seasons. 👋🏾
One former Laker (and current LA sports franchise co-owner) has thoughts about the sale. 🪄
Sports franchises don't come cheaply. Here are the American teams with the highest values. 🏀 💰 ⚾️ 💰 🏈

Key primaries in six states 🗳️

Primary voters in WisconsinMinnesotaAlabamaConnecticutVermont and South Carolina went to the polls Tuesday to decide who'll face off in key congressional and other races. Check out our takeaways from the most-watched races.

A former intelligence director at Southern Poverty Law Center was arrested in connection with the federal government’s case against the anti-extremism group, the Justice Department said.
Nick Reiner was officially indicted in connection with the murders of his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Reiner.
A digital news outlet and press advocacy group sued President Donald Trump over a plan to charge for early access to his Truth Social posts. 📲
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt announced she is stepping down to spend more time with her family.

Inflation keeps... inflating. 💸

The Labor Department said annual inflation rate eased a bit, but you could be forgiven for not noticing. The agency also said consumer prices ticked up in July. The bottom line for your bottom line means that prices are still rising, just not as quickly as they had been.

One price that never seems to go down: college tuition. Here's what the typical American family is now paying to send the kids to school. 💸

A celestial spectacle 😎

Millions of Americans (and even more Europeans) got a glimpse of a rare event: The moon passed directly over the sun on Wednesday, meaning some in the United States saw a partial solar eclipse, while parts of Europe got the total experience.

NASA said some of the best views came from Greenland, Iceland, Portugal, Spain and Russia. In the United States, the moon obscured only a portion of the sun, creating a crescent-shaped glow that NASA compares to a cookie with a bite taken out of it. (Sounds delicious!)

An image posted on Truth Social by President Donald Trump shows Robert Gilman, left, returning home after his release from Russian prison on Aug. 11, 2026 during a flight from Russia to Joint Base Andrews, Md. A former Marine held in a Russian prison since 2022 has been released and is headed back to the United States, President Donald Trump announced Tuesday, Aug. 11. Robert Gilman, a U.S. citizen from Lowell, Massachusetts, is facing a series of health complications, according to
those who advocated for his release. The 32-year-old was imprisoned for four years and subjected to torture that has left him in an "essentially catatonic" state, said U.S. Sen. Ed Markey. "I am proud to announce that American Citizen Robert Gilman, a former United States Marine, is coming HOME!" Trump said on Truth Social on Aug. 11. "I just spoke to him, and he had one request - A GREAT cheeseburger when he lands. I will take care of that!"
