Isn't it ironic? |
You know that feeling when you're trying so hard not to offend someone that you end up doing exactly that? That's ESPN right now. The network removed reporter Robert Lee from covering a football game at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville to spare him from possible ridicule after the recent protests in that city over the removal of a statue of Confederate general Robert E. Lee. But the memes came anyway, not mocking reporter Lee, but mocking ESPN. There were cries of politically correct culture run rampant. Others said removing Lee (who is Asian) from doing his job is the opposite of fighting racism. No one can agree where to draw the line. |
Samsung holds an event for its new Galaxy Note 8 and nothing explodes |
Samsung's pre-emptive answer to the rumored iPhone 8 is here. On Wednesday the South Korean electronics giant introduced the Galaxy Note 8 , a successor to last year's ill-fated, combustible Galaxy Note 7. With a 6.3-inch high resolution display, dual 12 megapixel cameras on the back, plus the usual assortment of high-end features like water resistance, fast wireless charging and a 3.5mm headphone jack (take that iPhone!), Samsung hopes the Note 8 can lure customers away from Apple. And don't worry, Samsung is putting the batteries through an eight-point battery check to make sure nothing goes up in flames. |
Life just got a little easier for Midwesterners who want to jet set to Europe |
Cheap flights to Europe aren't a novelty for Americans who live on the East and West Coasts. People in the Midwest, on the other hand, have to dump the entire piggy bank to afford the same. So it's welcome news for those in the middle of the country that Wow Air is expanding its $99 one-way fares to four Midwestern airports — Cincinnati, Cleveland, Detroit and St. Louis. One-way fares to Iceland will start at $99.99 from all four cities. Connecting flights to WOW's other European destinations begin at $149.99. WOW's new routes will launch this spring, with tickets going on sale Wednesday. |
#wefeelold: The hashtag turns 10 |
Before Aug. 23, 2007, the # symbol was a pound sign. That changed when Chris Messina used "#barcamp" as an example of grouping tweets together. Since then, we hashtag everything. #MondayMotivation, #ThrowbackThursday, #FollowFriday or the more recent #AdviceForBackToSchool. Twitter says we share 125 million hashtags per day. The most popular is #NowPlaying, which has been shared 1 billion times. |
