Trump: U.S. 'will take care' of North Korea following intercontinental ballistic missile launch

After a two-month hiatus, North Korea fired an intercontinental ballistic missile Wednesday from near the capital of Pyongyang. The missile traveled about 600 miles before splashing into the Sea of Japan, according to the Pentagon. North Korea hadn't tested a missile since Sept. 15, prompting hope the North was c urbing its aggressive pursuit of a nuclear weapon that could strike the U.S. mainland. Now it looks like the rogue nation is ramping up its efforts. South Korea warned that the North may develop a nuclear-tipped intercontinental ballistic missile capable of reaching the U.S. mainland by next year. Should we be worried? President Trump said Tuesday that the U.S. "will take care of it. ... It is a situation that we will handle."

Schumer, Pelosi say no thanks to meeting with Trump

With a tweet, President Trump spoiled an after-lunch meeting with Democratic congressional leaders Tuesday. Sen. Chuck Schumer and Rep. Nancy Pelosi pulled out of the planned meeting after the president tweeted: "I don't see a deal" with "Chuck and Nancy." Pelosi and Schumer had wanted to discuss a long-term solution for undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children, among other issues. It would have been a "show meeting," Schumer and Pelosi said about canceling plans. The meeting was one of many the president held Tuesday, when he also met with GOP lawmakers about his plan to pass tax cuts by Christmas. Senate Republicans remain optimistic the tax overhaul legislation could pass in the next few days.

New York Giants are thinking about life after Eli Manning

When it comes to football, the show must go on, and in the future, it may be proceeding for the Giants without Eli Manning. Coach Ben McAdoo announced Tuesday that veteran backup Geno Smith will start when the team faces the Raiders in Oakland on Sunday. Asked if he could see Manning being the Giants' quarterback next season, McAdoo said, "It's part of the evaluation process." Manning, 36, had started 210 consecutive regular-season games since replacing Kurt Warner midway through his rookie season, but he has struggled throughout 2017. As for hard feelings, Manning said he's "ready to play if and when I am needed."

Want the perfect Christmas tree? Go now, and be prepared to pay

Christmas trees will be harder to find and pricier this year — up to 10% more costly, according to the National Christmas Tree Association. Don't blame the Grinch. Blame the Great Recession. When the economy started tanking in 2008, growers didn't cut as many trees. So, they didn't have as much room to plant seedlings. Why does this history lesson matter? It takes about a decade for an evergreen to grow 7 to 8 feet tall (the desired size for most Christmas trees). So, those few seedlings are now the best crop of Christmas trees on lots this year, making prices higher. Low supply isn't the only reason trees will be more costly this year. Diesel fuel is also 46 cents more a gallon than a year ago, according to AAA. Last year, the average price of a Christmas tree was $74.70.

Save your pooch a trip to the vet: Don't feed Fido these treats

Choking. Vomiting. Diarrhea. Even death. That's what your dog could face from store bought "bone treats," the U.S. Food and Drug Administration warned recently.  The FDA said it has received nearly 70 reports of pet illnesses related to "bone treats." The snacks differ from actual butcher-type bones, and are processed and packaged for sale as dog treats, often with seasoning and smoke flavors. Treats listed in illness reports included "Ham Bones," "Pork Femur Bones," "Rib Bones" and "Smokey Knuckle Bones."
