France wins World Cup

France powered its way to the second World Cup title in its history on Sunday, storming past Croatia at Luzhniki Stadium in a dominant 4-2 triumph. An early own goal from Croatia's Mario Mandzukic – the first ever in a World Cup final – set France on its way, with Antoine Griezmann, Paul Pogba and Kylian Mbappe also getting on the scoresheet. After suffering the disappointment of losing the 2016 European Championship semifinal on home soil, the result gave Les Blues redemption, 20 years after capturing its first World Cup crown.

Trump has 'low expectations' for first formal summit with Putin

President Donald Trump says "nothing bad … maybe some good" will come out of his first, formal summit Monday with Russia's Vladimir Putin in Helsinki. Trump said he has "low expectations," though he will consider asking Putin to extradite the 12 Russian intelligence officers accused of hacking Democratic emails to the United States for prosecution. (White House national security adviser John Bolton said Sunday it's " hard to believe" Putin was unaware of the hack.) After a turbulent diplomatic trip to Brussels and London last week to meet with European allies, Trump's relationship with Putin will be scrutinized as much for its domestic political implications as it international significance.

Police scuffled with demonstrators Saturday evening in the nation's third-largest city, hours after a Chicago police officer fatally shot a man on the city's South Side. Police said in a statement that the fatal shooting happened when officers on foot in the South Shore neighborhood tried to question a man "exhibiting characteristics of an armed person." No police officers were injured in the confrontation with the suspected gunman. A weapon was recovered at the scene.

Wild weekend at Wimbledon

Novak Djokovic dominated the Wimbledon men's final against Kevin Anderson on Sunday, winning his first Grand Slam trophy in more than two years. Djokovic needed just 29 minutes to take the first set in the 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (3) victory, the fourth time the Serbian player has won Wimbledon. Talented southpaw Angelique Kerber  dominated Serena Williams in their Wimbledon final 6-3, 6-3 to win her third Grand Slam trophy in just 65 minutes Saturday. The 36-year-old Williams has 23 Grand Slam titles — one shy of current record-holder Margaret Court. While the opportunity to tie Court's record of 24 came and went on Saturday, Williams sees positives in the loss.

Public health officials in several states are investigating an outbreak of foodborne illness after dozens have been sickened in recent weeks after eating McDonald's salads. Dozens of people who ate salads at McDonald's restaurants in Illinois have suffered from Cyclosporiasis — an intestinal illness — since mid-May, while 16 were sickened in Iowa. Health officials in Missouri, Wisconsin, Nebraska, South Dakota and Minnesota also report they now have cases of people infected by the Cyclosporaparasite.  The multi-state total as of Saturday was 61.
