Death toll jumps to 25 in California wildfires; 250,000 flee

Firefighters battled Sunday in their herculean struggle against California wildfires that have killed at least 25 people, destroyed thousands of homes and forced 250,000 to flee . The Camp fire in Northern California had burned so hot it peeled the paint off firetrucks, melted tires and blew out windows in Paradise, a town laid to waste 90 miles north of Sacramento. The fire in Butte County had expanded Sunday to 170 square miles and was 25 percent contained.

In Southern California, the Woolsey Fire had burned at least 177 homes and other buildings while threatening more than 50,000 homes. Gusty Santa Ana winds were forecast to blow through Tuesday. Much of glitzy, picturesque Malibu was evacuated, and Hollywood stars were not spared the fire's ferocity. Shannen Doherty and Robin Thicke were among residents whose homes were destroyed.

Firefighter groups call Trump's California wildfire tweet 'shameful'

The presidents of two professional firefighters associations denounced President Donald Trump's assertion that "gross mismanagement of the forests " is to blame for California's devastating fires. California Professional Firefighters president Brian Rice called the president's words "ill-informed, ill-timed and demeaning" while Harold Schaitberger, General President of the International Association of Fire Fighters, said the comments were "reckless and insulting." With major wildfires still roaring out of control, Trump tweeted the comment Saturday and also threatened to withhold federal funds.

Trump-style nationalism rebuked by Macron as leaders remember WWI

Bells tolled Sunday as President Donald Trump and other leaders gathered in Paris to mourn the dead of World War I and reflect on preventing future conflicts. French President Emmanuel Macron appeared to reference Trump as he decried excessive "nationalism" at the root of the First World War and succeeding conflicts. "I know there are old demons coming back to the surface," Macron told world leaders at an event marking the centennial of the armistice that ended World War I. Macron described a "huge responsibility" to defeat modern forces threatening a "legacy of peace" from the two world wars.

Winston Churchill's grandson and others criticized Trump after "difficulties caused by the weather" prompted Trump to skip a Saturday visit to a World War I cemetery. Despite the rain, Macron of France, Angela Merkel of Germany, and Justin Trudeau of Canada attended events Saturday, as did Chief of Staff General John Kelly.

After deadly shooting, Thousand Oaks residents flock to buy guns

Brandon Simone, 35, had vowed never to have a gun in the same home as his kid. But following the nation's latest major deadly mass shooting down his street in Thousand Oaks, California, Simone drove to  the town's only brick-and-mortar gun store and inquired about buying a 9-millimeter pistol. He was one of several residents driven to the shop not by a collector's desire to hoard guns and accessories, but by raw fear. Law enforcement officials said Ian David Long, the gunman who killed 12 bar patrons in the shooting, posted on Instagram during the rampage that he "had no reason to do it."

Razor-thin margins spark Florida recount

Florida's secretary of state ordered a recount Saturday afternoon for three statewide races, including the governor and U.S. Senate contests. The margins in all races remain well under the half-percent needed to automatically trigger a machine recount. More than 8 million votes will be recounted. In the race for governor, Republican Ron DeSantis led Democrat Andrew Gillum as of Saturday, but Gillum reversed his concession amid the recount. In Georgia, Democratic candidate Stacey Abrams was pushed Saturday to concede in the race for governor. Brian Kemp, her Republican counterpart, was ahead by about 60,000 votes as of that day.

Timberwolves reach deal to trade disgruntled star Jimmy Butler to 76ers

The Minnesota Timberwolves reached an agreement to trade disgruntled All-Star Jimmy Butler and Justin Patton to the Philadelphia 76ers for Dario Saric, Robert Covington, Jerryd Bayless and a second-round pick, two people familiar with deal told USA TODAY Sports Saturday. The trade puts an end to the chaos that enveloped the Timberwolves since Butler asked for a trade before the start of training camp. The move also gives the Sixers a much-needed All-Star and the type of two-way player who can elevate the team to becoming a contender for winning the Eastern Conference this year, writes USA TODAY Sports' NBA reporter Jeff Zillgitt.
