Woman stepped in front of bullets to save rabbi at synagogue shooting

One woman was killed and three others were wounded when a man entered a San Diego synagogue during Passover services Saturday and opened fire with an AR-style assault weapon. The woman killed, Lori Gilbert-Kaye, 60, stepped in front of bullets fired at her longtime friend and rabbi as he gave his sermon, according to her friends and authorities. Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein, despite losing an index finger in the shooting, insisted on finishing his sermon before going to the hospital. The 19-year-old shooting suspect , who posted an online "manifesto" in which he criticized members of the Jewish faith before the attack, was arrested. President Donald Trump, California Gov. Gavin Newsom and the city's mayor all called the attack a hate crime

Oh, snap: 'Avengers: Endgame' shatters records to earn $1.2B

"Avengers: Endgame" shattered the record for biggest opening weekend with an estimated $350 million in ticket sales domestically and $1.2 billion globally, reaching a new pinnacle in the blockbuster era that the comic-book studio has come to dominate. The "Avengers" finale far exceeded even its own gargantuan expectations , according to studio estimates Sunday. The movie had been forecast to open with $260 million to $300 million in U.S. and Canadian theaters, but moviegoers turned out in such droves that "Endgame" blew past the record $257.7 million set last year by "Avengers: Infinity War" when it narrowly surpassed "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" ($248 million).

Barr threatens to skip Mueller report House hearing over format

Attorney General William Barr has warned a House committee that he could refuse to appear at Thursday's anticipated hearing on the Justice Department's handling of the Russia investigation if lawmakers go through with a plan to let staff lawyers question him . Barr's threat is a new escalation in the tension between House leaders and the Trump administration, which has vowed to resist Democratic efforts to probe more deeply into President Donald Trump's conduct in office and his outside business dealings. Barr is scheduled to make two appearances before Congress this week to answer questions about the special counsel investigation. The first, on Wednesday, is before the Republican controlled Senate Judiciary Committee.

NRA power struggle: President won't seek second term

Oliver North said Saturday he will not serve a second term as president of the National Rifle Association, in a surprise move after a bitter fight with Wayne LaPierre, the chief  executive and longtime public face of the gun rights organization. North's announcement came after LaPierre charged that North, a controversial figure in the 1980s Iran-Contra scandal, was trying to drive him out of the organization. North's decision not to run for re-election came in a letter from North that was read to the group's convention in Indianapolis by Richard Childress, the NRA's second vice president.

Construction crane falls on busy Seattle street, killing 4

A construction crane fell from a building on Google's new Seattle campus during a storm, crashing onto one of the city's busiest streets and killing four people . One female and three males died by the time firefighters arrived Saturday, Fire Chief Harold Scoggins said. Two of the dead were ironworkers who had been inside the crane while the other two were inside cars, a fire department spokesman said. A 25-year-old mother and her 4-month-old daughter were in a car smashed by the crane, but both escaped with minor injuries. Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan called it a miracle.

Former Indiana Senator Richard Lugar dies

Richard Lugar, a foreign policy giant and former Indiana senator, has died . Lugar, 87, who received the Defense Department's highest civilian award for efforts to secure and destroy weapons of mass destruction after the collapse of the Soviet Union, died Sunday, according to his family. He served as mayor of Indianapolis from 1968 to 1975 and served in the Senate from 1977 to 2013. Investigation continues after 7 found dead in rural Tennessee

An investigation continued Sunday after seven people were found dead  in a rural Tennessee county, authorities say. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation confirmed that bodies of the victims were found Saturday in two homes about a mile from each other, and there was reason to believe the two scenes were related. Another person was injured in the incidents. One of the victims was a 12-year-old girl, District Attorney Ray Whitley confirmed. The TBI named Michael Cummins, 25, as a suspect and law enforcement took him into custody after a massive manhunt Saturday night. Cummins was shot by law enforcement while being captured and taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

New York Giants draft choice injured in off-campus shooting

Two football players from Washburn University — one of them selected by the New York Giants in this week's NFL Draft — were victims in an off-campus shooting early Sunday, the school announced. Junior defensive back Dwane Simmons was killed in the shooting while cornerback Corey Ballentine, taken in the sixth round Saturday, sustained injuries. The Giants said they are aware of the shooting, and Ballentine's injuries are not life-threatening. A school press conference scheduled for Sunday afternoon to celebrate Ballentine's selection was postponed.
