Think humans. But tiny. We found them.

From claims of spying on Trump to a new cousin to our species, here's Wednesday's news. ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌

The Short List

Think humans. But tiny. We found them.
From claims of spying on Trump to a new cousin to our species, here's Wednesday's news.

Wednesday's Short List in five words: Explosion. Tiny. Spies. Kardashian. Blackhole. OK, black hole is two words. I tried. It's Ashley with today's news.

But first, yet another reason to love dogs: They can sniff out lung cancer with 97% accuracy through their super-sensitive (and cute, boop!) noses

'Spying did occur' on Trump.

Was President Donald Trump's campaign spied upon? Wrongly spied upon? Attorney General William Barr thinks maybe so. Barr told a Senate panel Wednesday that he's reviewing whether federal authorities improperly spied on the Trump campaign during the now-completed inquiry tied to Russia. "I think spying did occur. The question is whether it was adequately predicated," Barr said. The attorney general planned to examine the "genesis and the conduct" of the FBI's investigation that was turned over to Robert Mueller to complete, he said. Barr said the report concluded that Trump's campaign did not conspire with Russia.

A black hole photo, the first

It's one of the weirdest things in the universe. Now we have a photo of it: Astronomers on Wednesday released humanity's first-ever image of a black hole.  The picture shows the object at the center of Messier 87, a big ol' galaxy in the "nearby" Virgo galaxy cluster. Since the black hole is, well, black, what you see in the image is gas and dust circling around the hole, just far enough away to be safe. This black hole is 55 million light-years from Earth and has a mass 6.5 billion times that of the sun.

The Event Horizon Telescope captures a black hole at the center of galaxy M87, outlined by emissions from hot gas swirling around it under the influence of super-strong gravity.

A tiny cousin to Homo sapiens

A tiny, long-lost cousin of our own human species has been discovered,  scientists annouced Wednesday. Several bones and teeth found in a cave in the Philippines "provide sufficient evidence of a new species" that lived on the island of Luzon about 50,000 to 67,000 years ago, a new study says. Those of the species may have been only about 3 feet tall, and a now-extinct offshoot of our own species (but not a direct ancestor). As a shout-out to the island where it was discovered, the new species was named Homo luzonensis.

A deadly gas explosion felt blocks away

One person was killed and at least 17 injured in an apparent gas explosion Wednesday in Durham, North Carolina, that caused a building to partly collapse near downtown, officials said. A contractor digging under the sidewalk hit a 2-inch gas line, causing the explosion and collapse, said Wil Glenn, a Durham Police Department spokesman. The force of the explosion was felt two blocks away, where the windows of a nearby restaurant blew out.

Trump (still) won't show his taxes

Tax season brings out the best in people: The president said Wednesday that he won't authorize the release of his tax returns,  likely setting up a big legal battle over whether Congress can review his financial records. "I'm not gonna do it while I'm under audit," Trump told reporters at the White House, though congressional Democrats said the law entitles them to review tax records. The president has said for years that he would not release his taxes because they are under audit, but here's the thing: That's not a legal requirement; he can release his returns under audit or not.

Speaking of taxes: If you haven't filed yet (due Monday!) and feel pressed for time, here's how to file a tax extension
