Mitch McConnell's family tree goes under a microscope. The "Lion Queen" makes her debut. And we're all going to die (sooner than expected). It's Ashley with Tuesday's news. |
But first, a doggone good kid: This little boy didn't want toys for his birthday. Instead, he asked for money to help homeless dogs find families. |
A crack in the soil seen from space |
The two massive earthquakes that rocked Southern California last week left a crack in the Earth so big it can be seen from space. Before-and-after satellite photos show a rupture in the Earth's surface after Friday's 7.1 magnitude quake near Ridgecrest, California. The crack, which stretches through the Mojave Desert and across a highway, was initially about 2 inches wide and eventually became deep enough for brave spectators to reach their limbs inside, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. The quakes were the strongest to hit the state in two decades. |

'President Trump should fire him' |
Top Democrats in Congress call for Labor Secretary Alexander Acosta's resignation over a plea deal he cut as a U.S. attorney that gave a light sentence to multimillionaire Jeffrey Epstein, who allegedly engaged in sex acts with dozens of minors. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Monday that Acosta "must step down," and Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer called for his resignation. "If he refuses to resign, President Trump should fire him," Schumer said from the Senate floor Tuesday. "Instead of prosecuting a predatory and serial sex trafficker of children, Acosta chose to let him off easy." Acosta stood by his decision to offer Epstein a deal, and President Trump backed him up. |

We had a good run, everyone |
The average life expectancy in the USA has declined for three straight years. A baby born in 2017 is expected to live to be 78.6 years old, which is down from 78.7 the year before, according to CDC data. The past three years are the longest consecutive decline in the American lifespan since 1915 and 1918, which included WWI and the Spanish Flu pandemic – you know, events that killed millions worldwide. Though there's no single cause for the decline, a report by the CDC highlights three contributing factors: a rise in drug overdoses, an increase in liver disease and a rise in suicide rates. |
Uh, did Mitch McConnell's family own 14 slaves? |
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is making more headlines for slave reparations. A new report claims that McConnell's family owned more than a dozen slaves. The NBC News report that dropped Monday says census and ancestry records show two of the Kentucky Republican's great-great-grandfathers owned at least 14 slaves in Limestone County, Alabama. McConnell's comments on slave reparations drew controversy in June. "I don't think reparations for something that happened 150 years ago, when none of us currently living are responsible, is a good idea," he said. He suggested electing Barack Obama as president could be considered a form of compensation. |
Oh, and Mitch has competition: A former Marine fighter pilot and Democrat named Amy McGrath announced plans to take McConnell's Senate seat in 2020. Here's what to know. |

Weeks after shooting, Virginia rejects tougher gun laws |
Virginia Republicans slammed the door on a wide range of gun control measures Tuesday, less than six weeks after a gunman's rampage left 12 people dead in Virginia Beach. The proposed measures included a ban on assault weapons, high-capacity magazines, bump stocks and silencers and background checks on all firearms sales. Gov. Ralph Northam and other state Democratic leaders hoped outrage sparked by the shooting would propel their plan through the Legislature. "Let's turn our pain into purpose," Northam tweeted before the session. Supporters of the measures rallied at the state's Capitol as Northam led them in vigorous chants of "enough is enough" as gun rights supporters held their own demonstration nearby. |
