Trump on tweets panned as racist: 'Many people agree with me'

Under fire for tweets that many considered racist, President Donald Trump said Monday that the minority Democratic congresswomen he said should "go back" and fix the countries they "originally came from" are the ones who should apologize.  Trump's tweets were seemingly aimed at four Hispanic and black House freshmen members known as "the Squad:" Democratic Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ayanna Pressley, Rashida Tlaib, and Ilhan Omar. The first three were born in the United States; Omar was born in Somalia.

Trump said he wasn't concerned about the tweets being considered racist. "It doesn't concern me because many people agree with me," Trump said. A few Republican lawmakers joined Democrats to condemn Trump's remarks. "We all know that AOC and this crowd are a bunch of communists," Sen. Lindsey Graham said, but added that the president should "knock it down a notch."

'Sexually abused by Jeffrey Epstein at the age of 14'

Jeffrey Epstein, who is awaiting trial on sex-trafficking and sex-trafficking conspiracy charges, remained detained Monday after a bail hearing with two women who said he sexually attacked them when they were teens. In one of the bail hearing's most dramatic moments, Courtney Wild, one of Epstein's accusers, stood at the federal courtroom lectern and declared: " I was sexually abused by Jeffrey Epstein at the age of 14." Wild characterized Epstein, 66, as a "very scary person to have walking the streets" and said he should remain in detention to protect other girls from experiencing what she went through. The federal judge said he will announce a decision on bail Thursday. One of Epstein's lawyers said he was "ready to sign" and pledge millions for bail, no matter the price.

Charlottesville neo-Nazi gets life in prison

James Alex Fields Jr., a neo-Nazi who killed Heather Heyer and injured dozens when he drove his car into counterprotesters at the "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, was sentenced to life in prison plus 419 years in state court Monday.  Fields, 22, was convicted of murdering 32-year-old Heyer in December. Hundreds of counterprotesters turned out in 2017 to face an assortment of alt-right and far-right protesters, who had descended upon the college town to rally against the removal of a Confederate statue. At the time of the attack, President Trump blamed the violence at the rally on "both sides," sparking further controversy and stirring racial tensions.

When hurricane watch becomes snake watch 🐍

Hurricane Barry may have quieted to a tropical depression Monday, but the dangerous storm still threatened flooding, tornadoes and new concern: snakes. Residents in St. Tammany Parish, 50 miles north of New Orleans, were urged to " watch out for snakes and other critters who are trying to escape the flood waters." Heavy rain spread across Louisiana, Mississippi, and eastern Arkansas on Monday. The risk for major flooding hung over the region that could see up to two feet of rain before skies clear later Monday or Tuesday, AccuWeather forecasted.

A jellyfish the size of a human

A giant barrel jellyfish was spotted off the coast of southwest England, and a stunning video shows the massive creature swimming with (brave) divers. According to the Dorset Wildlife Trust, this big guy is the largest jellyfish that can be found in the U.K.'s waters, measuring up to almost 3 feet across their bell and weighing up to 75 pounds.

Diver Lizzie Daly estimates the jellyfish was almost 5 feet long, about as tall as she is.
