After a weekend of shootings, many answers remain unclear. Today's Short List starts with shooting updates from Ohio and Texas, then we'll get to the rest of today's news.

Here's what to know Monday.

But first, there's no script for discussing shootings: If you have kids and, like most of us, are at a loss for words, here are four tips from experts on discussing tragedy with children.

One weekend, two shootings, 31 people dead

Americans woke up Monday to a grim statistic: At least 31 people died and more than 50 were wounded in two mass shootings in Dayton, Ohio, and El Paso, Texas, over the weekend. Here's the latest as updates from the shootings unfold:

The El Paso death toll rose to 22 people Monday. The violence has left the city reeling: The border city had 23 homicides all last year.
Police say the Walmart where the El Paso shooting took place had about 3,000 shoppers inside. The store isn't banning gun sales, though critics say it should.
Ohio police killed the Dayton shooter in less than a minute and saved "literally hundreds of lives" after he killed nine people and wounded 27. Surveillance video captured the scene.
Officials said the Dayton gunman's younger sister was one of the first to die in his rampage. Police wonder: Did he plan to kill her?
Semiautomatic weapons that hold dozens of bullets  were used in both shootings. The guns were legal to purchase.
President Donald Trump condemned white supremacy in an address Monday: "Hate has no place in America."

Stocks plunged big time

U.S. stocks were slammed Monday as trade tensions between the U.S. and China intensified, causing the Dow to plummet almost 800 points. Investors sold stocks frantically after China's currency, the yuan, weakened sharply against the U.S. dollar – its lowest in 11 years. The grim day follows the market's worst week of the year. Trump called last week for more tariffs on Chinese goods.

Robert F. Kennedy's granddaughter laid to rest

Saoirse Kennedy Hill, 22, granddaughter of the late Robert F. Kennedy, was honored at a funeral Monday in Cape Cod after her sudden death Thursday.
