Friday, July 22

Good morning and happy Friday. We survived another week, Daily Money readers. It's Jayme Deerwester back with you.

It's barely been a month since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, eliminating the constitutional right to abortion but we're well into a bumpy transition period.

Pharmacy customers are using the hashtag #BoycottWalgreens on social media platforms like TikTok and Twitter to highlight being denied birth control or condoms because of the cashier's moral or religious beliefs

Why? Walgreens says it "allows pharmacists to step away from filling a prescription for which they have a moral objection."

In responding to customer inquiries on Twitter, the company added, "At the same time, they are also required to refer the prescription to another pharmacist or manager on duty to meet the patient's needs in a timely manner."

Retailers walloped by double whammy of inflation, recession fears

Inflation's historic rise now has retailers making difficult decisions between raising prices and losing customers or maintaining prices and losing profits

Many banked big profits during the pandemic, when customers grabbed anything they could find, fearing a product could be gone a few minutes later. But stores kept ordering at pandemic pace. And they were late to respond to changing demands as more people got vaccinated and spent more time away from home after social distancing requirements were relaxed.

As a result, stores wound up sitting on bulky merchandise like patio furniture and TVs and offering deep discounts to get it out of warehouses and off their books.

Then came inflation, and with it, a surprisingly quick shift in consumer spending and higher costs, including transportation and overstaffing, driving down profits. And if that persists, retailers could see decreasing sales and possibly a recession. And if that happens, consumers will reduce spending even further.

"It's those retail goods that I bought a lot of during the pandemic that I'm really going to cut back on in the recession," says Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Analytics. "Even if we don't go into recession, retailers are going to have a hard time."

I can't believe I'm quoting Blink-182 – sorry, not a big fan – but here I am, doing just that:

"Friday nights always save my life from the worst of times we ever had. Thank God for punk rock bands. Until Monday morning strikes again, we are the kings of the weekend."
