The Daily Money: Local governments struggle to hire workers. Why it matters to you.

Local governments are struggling to hire new employees as the private sector recoups pre-pandemic jobs. Plus, gas prices keep falling. ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌

Happy Monday, Daily Money readers. It's Brett Molina filling in with the top Money, Tech and Travel stories to kick off another week.

Let's start with some good news: gas prices keep on dropping. As of Friday, gas prices dipped for 30 straight days after many drivers were paying upwards of $5 per gallon at the pump. On Friday, regular unleaded gas was averaging $4.58 a gallon.

We've reached 33 consecutive days of dropping gas prices when you factor in this past weekend and Monday's prices. On Monday, regular unleaded is averaging $4.521 a gallon, according to AAA.

While it spells temporary relief for those of us spending lots of money at the pump, gas prices are still much higher than normal. At this time a year ago, gas was hovering around $3.16 a gallon.

Local governments lag in hiring

While the private sector has quickly rebounded in attracting workers and recouping losses linked to the COVID-19 pandemic, the public sector is still struggling. But before you point fingers at the U.S. government, it's actually local governments that are having a really tough time hiring employees.

Hundreds of thousands of government workers who were furloughed early in the pandemic didn't come back because they retired early or found better private-sector jobs. Since then, others have left due to COVID concerns, burnout and other factors.

Why should you care? All those services you receive from your local government might get reduced, not to mention road repairs and other projects will see delays, say officials at the National League of Cities and the National Association of Towns and Townships.
