Why have all these drones been buzzing around the skies in New Jersey? President Joe Biden commuted 1,500 sentences and pardoned 39 people. And the UnitedHealthcare CEO shooting shines a new spotlight on 3D-printed firearms.

👋 Hi there! Laura Davis here. Let's get you caught up on Thursday's news, shall we?

Mysterious drones swarm the skies

For the past four weeks, a buzz has been growing in New Jersey. But this isn't a new fun trend – it's drones. Lots of them!

Many drones, few answers: At least 180 sightings of clusters of unidentified drones buzzing the night skies over New Jersey − as well as Pennsylvania and New York − have alarmed residents, infuriated members of Congress and prompted a call for a state of emergency in the Garden State. Some of the drones have even been spotted over military installations and President-elect Donald Trump's golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey. Federal officials have said sightings are under investigation but haven't been able to provide any explanation. 🛸 Here's what we know.

A spotlight on homemade guns

For decades, America's detectives have made breakthroughs in crime using gun traces. A homicide investigator typically uses ballistics and serial numbers of weapons checked via a vast network of gun shop records, manufacturer IDs and crime databases. But those tactics are quickly becoming old-school. A new era of weapons is hitting the nation's streets: Enter untraceable 3D-printed guns and silencers like the ones found this week on the suspect in the shooting of UnitedHealthcare's CEO. Experts say it's just the latest example of a troubling and growing trend around the nation of criminals using 3D-printed guns. 🔎 We break it down.

Today's updates: Shooting suspect's lawyer responds to new evidence.
Watch: The growing danger of 3D-printed firearms.

Just a decade ago, 3D-printed guns were a novelty. Now, they've become an untraceable menace in the crime world. Federal officials say more than 25,000 homemade guns were recovered in 2022 alone.

All the president's pardons

In what the White House described as the largest single-day act of clemency in modern history, President Joe Biden is commuting the sentences of nearly 1,500 people who were placed on home confinement during the COVID pandemic and pardoning 39 others convicted of nonviolent crimes. 👉 More about the clemency, pardon recipients.

What's next? Biden said he would "take more steps in the weeks ahead" and continue to review clemency petitions to advance "equal justice under the law."
