Donald Trump's sprawling Mar-a-Lago press conference |
On Tuesday, the president-elect held a wide-ranging news conference where he declined to rule out U.S. military involvement to acquire Greenland and the Panama Canal and suggested a name change for the "Gulf of Mexico." |
This isn't the first news conference Trump has held since winning the 2024 presidential election — and it's something we can continue to expect once he's back in the Oval Office. Here's a roundup of the biggest news from his conference: |
• | When asked whether he will rule out military or economic coercion to acquire Greenland and the Panama Canal, Trump on Tuesday said "I can't assure you of either of those two." He said the United States needs both locations for "economic security." | • | Trump wants to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the "Gulf of America." However, the president-elect didn't specify when or how he intends to make that change. | • | Get ready for "major pardons" for some Jan. 6 defendants. "People that didn't even walk into the building are in jail right now," Trump claimed. | • | When it comes to our world allies, Trump said that NATO member countries "were taking advantage" of the U.S. and should be paying more than double what they currently are required to pay for their military defense. | • | Trump wasn't the only one to take the stage. His Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, said at the press conference that he hopes to have good things to report about hostages held by Hamas in Gaza by the time Trump is sworn in as U.S. president on Jan. 20. | | President-elect Donald Trump makes remarks at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida on January 7, 2025.
