Here's why that Delta jet poured fuel over schoolchildren |
The Delta pilots who bombarded elementary school playgrounds with jet fuel before making an emergency landing in Los Angeles on Tuesday failed to notify air traffic control of the need to dump fuel and did not dump it an an optimal altitude, the FAA said Wednesday. Scores of people were on the ground when the fuel was released, including students at multiple schools who were treated for eye and skin irritation, Los Angeles County fire officials said. Peter Goelz, a former managing director for the National Transportation Safety Board, said it might be too early to judge the decisions of a pilot trying to ensure the safety of his passengers and crew. "When you have a problem that threatens the aircraft and you have to get rid of fuel, you get rid of it fast," Goelz said. Releasing the fuel was probably "not an easy call," he said. |

Trump's impeachment trial stage is set |
Remember the impeachment of President Trump? That's still a thing, and it's really heating up. The House voted Wednesday to send articles of impeachment against Trump to the Senate, accusing him of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. Trump's future rests in the hands of the Republican-majority Senate, which is likely to begin a trial on whether to remove the president from office next week. Next. Week. A two-thirds majority of the Senate would be required to convict and remove Trump, which is unlikely in a chamber where Republicans outnumber Democrats 53 to 47. |

Video reportedly shows second Iranian missile hit doomed plane |
Surveillance video circulating on social media appears to show two missiles slamming into a Ukrainian passenger jet that crashed, killing all 176 people aboard in Tehran a week ago. The blurry video, verified by The New York Times and Storyful, appears to show a missile launching from a site near Imam Khomeini International Airport and damaging the plane moments before a second missile struck, further crippling the aircraft. The plane crashed minutes later. For three days, the Iranian military rejected claims that Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752 was shot down. Then Saturday, the military issued a statement saying the plane was accidentally shot down "due to human error at a time of heightened U.S. threats of war." The news triggered angry protests across the country, and news of a second missile could further inflame Iranians outraged by the government's handling of the tragedy. |

Dark smoke is circling Earth, and it's coming from Australia, NASA says |
If there was any question that the fires in Australia aren't a global issue, NASA has something to show you. Images from the agency show a trail of bushfire smoke making its way around the world. According to NASA, the unprecedented masses of smoke created by the fires returned to their continent of origin after drifting across the Pacific Ocean and orbiting the globe. The fires have claimed at least 28 lives since September, destroyed more than 2,600 homes and scorched more than 25.5 million acres of land, mostly in the state of New South Wales. |

Lori Loughlin's husband probably isn't joking about the USC admissions process now |
Fashion designer Mossimo Giannulli rejected a University of Southern California administrator's offer to help with his daughter's application to the school through the regular admissions process, then he joked about it with his wife, actress Lori Loughlin, prosecutors allege. The email exchange is included in a motion filed by prosecutors Tuesday in the national college admissions scandal. Prosecutors cited an email in September 2016 from a USC official to provide one-on-one interviews and a tour of the campus for the family. "Thanks so much, I think we are squared away," Giannulli wrote back, declining the invitation. He forwarded the exchange to Loughlin, telling his wife, "The nicest I've been at blowing off somebody." |
