America's story of heartbreak |
The second week of April marked the deadliest week since the coronavirus pandemic arrived in the United States three months ago. According to numbers tracked by USA TODAY , 12,056 Americans succumbed to COVID-19 in that seven-day span. By the end of the week, the U.S. had eclipsed Italy with the most reported coronavirus deaths in the world. The death toll was highest in New York, Chicago, Seattle, Detroit and New Orleans, where bodies beset hospitals and overflowed morgues. To better understand the tragedy, USA TODAY reporters interviewed those on the front lines of the outbreak about what they witnessed as the painful week unfolded. This story is grim, but it captures moments of hope and human triumph. |

Notre Dame Cathedral, a year after its horrifying fire |
It's been one year since the devastating fire that partly destroyed Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris and its precious artworks visited by millions each year. The fire on April 15, 2019, burned for hours virtually unabated despite the efforts of hundreds of firefighters. While French President Emmanuel Macron has promised Notre Dame will reopen to the public by 2024, the restoration process hasn't gone according to plan. The coronavirus pandemic has brought reconstruction efforts to a halt, and some experts have said the cathedral may never recover . But those in charge of returning one of the world's most remarkable places of worship to its glory haven't lost faith. |

Today's reader question: Will my stimulus check be affected if I owe taxes? |
... or child support? |
... or overdue on student loan payments? |
Answer: While the CARES Act suspends debts like overdue student loans or back taxes that typically lead to the garnishment of tax refunds, it doesn't apply to delinquent child support payments. That means the government's relief checks will still be garnished if you're overdue. Need more info? We've got you covered. |
