Today we celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., whose contributions to social justice and calls for equality and non-violent protest hold distinct weight this year. |
These three pieces connect King's teachings to 2021, and are worth your time: |
• | Jim Clyburn, D.-S.C., who fought for civil rights with King, draws parallels between the 1960s and today, arguing the USA is at a crossroads that needs strong leadership from President-elect Joe Biden. | • | "In particular, we should return to Dr. King's inspired principles for advancing social justice through nonviolence rooted in compassion. These principles should be included in the curriculum for today's students," opinion contributors Anthony Jones and Matthew Daniels write. | • | In a video for The New York Times, King's son, Martin Luther King III, urges that it's time to act upon a different part of his father's legacy – the one which he was speaking out against when shot in Memphis – the fight against poverty and income inequality. | |
I also wanted to highlight This is America, a weekly newsletter about race, identity and current events, written by a rotating panel of diverse USA TODAY Network journalists. |
"Last week's events were an assault on American democracy but it also felt like another attack on Black and brown people," Jacqué Palmer writes in this past edition, providing tips from therapists on how to process the Capitol riot as a person of color. |
