Good morning, friends of The Short List! It's John, and I'm here with the weekend's long reads.

Today marks a somber anniversary: One year ago today, Breonna Taylor was killed by police officers in her Louisville, Kentucky, home. 

There was something about Breonna – her openness, her hopefulness – that touched people, especially women. Her name became a rallying cry during protests over her death, then again after the deaths of George Floyd and others at the hands of police. This week, amid the trial of Derek Chauvin, the former police officer accused in the killing of George Floyd, the trauma of her death continues to ripple through Black communities.
