A short list of long reads you'll want to talk about this weekend.

Greetings, friends of The Short List! And Happy Juneteenth!

What? You haven't celebrated Juneteenth before? Here's a quick explainer: Juneteenth commemorates the day news of the Emancipation Proclamation reached Texas in 1865.

Although Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation became effective Jan. 1, 1863, some owners of slaves didn't give them the message that they were free. On June 19, 1865, Union Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger brought the news to Galveston – and told the locals to get with the program.

On Thursday, President Biden signed a bill to recognize Juneteenth as an official federal holiday. πŸŽ‰

Meanwhile, this year's celebrations come as may state legislatures are attempting to ban school discussions of the long-lasting effects of slavery, systemic racism and critical race theory.

I almost forgot! It's John, here with a celebration of long reads.

Now that summer's here, it's time for summer travel! With the pandemic easing and the economy rebounding, Americans are ready to go somewhere – anywhere. A recent poll by travel insurance firm World Nomads suggests 66% of Americans are planning a summer trip. Of those, about one-third have already made reservations.

With that in mind, these stories can help you plan your much-deserved summer getaway.

Things you should know

Yes, the airports will be mobbed. No, masks aren't optional. Here's what you should know about summer flights.

If you're hoping to visit a specific national park this summer, don't expect to just show up. A lot of the most famous are fully booked.

Likewise, this summer is likely to see record boat traffic – including lots of first-time boat owners. Make sure you practice "nautical distancing."

Pain points

Expect a lengthy wait if you call your airline. Most airlines cut staff at the start of the pandemic and many are still catching up.

'I marinated in Fort Lauderdale for 45 minutes': A shortage of Uber and Lyft drivers is leaving travelers waiting ... and waiting ...

Car renters be warned: Surging demand and a shrunken supply of cars equals soaring prices.

Are there still restrictions?

Final thought

Tomorrow is Father's Day. You still have time to pick up something for Dear Old Dad.
