| New York City welcomed the new year — and bid good riddance to 2021 — as confetti and cheers spread across Times Square and as a New Year's Eve tradition returned to a city beleaguered by a global pandemic . The new year marched across the globe, time zone by time zone, and thousands of New Year's revelers stood shoulder to shoulder in a slight chill to witness a 6-ton ball descend above a crowd of about 15,000 in-person spectators — far fewer than the many tens of thousands of revelers who usually descend on the world-famous square to bask in the lights and hoopla of the nation's marquee New Year's Eve event. But 2022 begins just as the year prior began — with the pandemic clouding an already uncertain future. |

3 people missing after Colorado wildfire, officials say |
| Authorities say three people are believed to be missing after a wind-fueled wildfire scorched about 10 square miles of thickly populated suburbs and destroyed hundreds of homes in towns north of Denver earlier this week . "Unfortunately we believe these are going to turn into recovery cases," Boulder County Sheriff Joe Pelle said at a news briefing Saturday. The news comes after authorities have repeatedly expressed amazement that the fire did not result in more injuries. "We're very fortunate we don't have a list of 100 missing," Pelle said Saturday. Cadaver dogs were brought in starting Sunday to try to locate the missing people. He said weather conditions were hindering the ability to search and recover bodies. |

CDC may add testing to isolation guidance, Fauci says |
| Dr. Anthony Fauci said Sunday the CDC is considering amending its new, five-day isolation guidance for asymptomatic patients to include testing . Last week, the CDC cut in half the amount of time it recommends asymptomatic people should isolate after testing positive. The recommendation does call for wearing masks in public for the next five days but dropped any requirement of a negative test. "The CDC is very well aware that there has been some pushback" about dropping the testing requirement, Fauci said on ABC News' "This Week." "I think we could be hearing more about that in the next day or so from the CDC." |

Alabama, Georgia advance to national championship game |
| Georgia barely broke a sweat and bulldozed Michigan 34-11 in the national semifinals at the Orange Bowl, sending the Bulldogs into an SEC-only championship game against Alabama for the second time in the history of College Football Playoff format . The rematch with the Tide stirs memories of multiple high-profile meetings between the SEC powers in the past decade — all won by Alabama, the last roadblock between the Bulldogs and the program's first national championship since 1980. The Tide won the 2017 championship after topping Georgia in overtime. The following year, Alabama turned to then-backup quarterback Jalen Hurts to spark a 35-28 win and take home the SEC. Overall, the Tide will take a seven-game winning streak in the rivalry into the championship game, set for Indianapolis on Jan. 10. |

Betty White, 'The First Lady of Television,' dies at 99 |
| Betty White, the legendary "Golden Girls" star was known for her decades-long career in television , died Friday at 99. From White's very first television series, "Life With Elizabeth," there has hardly been a time when she has not been a regular presence in America's homes. She was set to celebrate her 100th birthday and had big plans to do so, inviting fans to mark the milestone with "Betty White: 100 Years Young — a Birthday Celebration." Fathom Events confirmed the film will still play in almost 900 movie theaters nationwide at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Jan. 17 as planned. |
