In effort to ease gas prices, Biden wants to expand ethanol blend availability |
| President Joe Biden will announce Tuesday another step to try to reduce prices for drivers paying more at the pump: expanding the availability of biofuels. While visiting an ethanol plant in Menlo, Iowa, a small farming community west of the state's capital of Des Moines, Biden will announce the administration's plans on allowing gasoline that uses a 15% ethanol blend to be sold during the summer, according to senior officials who spoke on condition of anonymity. Called E15, the blend can cost 10 cents per gallon less on average at the 2,300 gas stations where it's sold, the officials said. Administration officials said the action Biden will announce will increase the use of home-grown biofuels, reducing dependence on foreign fuels. Iowa is the nation's top producer of renewable fuel and the corn used to make it. Regular gas is averaging around $4.11 a gallon compared with $2.86 a year ago, AAA reports, and Biden is under political pressure to show he is doing what he can to ease the price of gas. |
Inflation still squeezing US consumers; numbers expected to shoot up again |
| The federal Labor Department will give an updated look at how inflation is pinching pocketbooks Tuesday when the latest Consumer Price Index is released. Last month's CPI report showed 7.9% inflation over the previous 12 months, the highest year-over-year increase in decades. The index being released Tuesday is expected to show that prices shot up 8.4% from 12 months earlier, according to economists surveyed by the data firm FactSet for an Associated Press report. Rising prices have been evident at the grocery store, where a recent U.S. Department of Agriculture report warned "all food prices are now predicted to increase" in the coming months. |

Blizzard, fires, storms, tornadoes: 18 states could see severe weather |
| A system of severe weather will arrive in parts of the northern and central United States Tuesday. A significant spring snowstorm headed for the northern Plains is packing blizzard conditions with significant snow accumulation, according to the National Weather Service. Meteorologists posted a blizzard warning for a large section of western North Dakota and smaller areas of South Dakota and Montana beginning Tuesday through Thursday evening. The same system that brought snow north will bring a multiday weather outbreak to the Central U.S. By Tuesday, the severe storm threat area will expand to include states from Iowa to Texas, where hail, wind and tornadoes are again possible. |

Johnny Depp, Amber Heard set to face off again in Virginia libel trial |
| The venomous divorce of movie stars Johnny Depp, 58, and Amber Heard, 35, continues six years later, now in a $50 million (or more) libel trial that opened Monday in Fairfax County, Virginia. A long list of witnesses includes actor Paul Bettany (for Depp) and actor James Franco and tech entrepreneur Elon Musk (for Heard). On Monday, a panel of 11 – seven jurors and four alternates – was picked, according to Court TV, which is broadcasting the trial. The smaller jury is typical for civil trials in Virginia. Opening statements in the case are scheduled for Tuesday. Depp is alleging Heard defamed him in an opinion column she published in the Washington Post (which is printed in Fairfax County) in December 2018. In the column, she claimed to be a victim of domestic abuse, a claim she first raised during their corrosive divorce proceeding in 2016. Heard never proved she was abused because their divorce was settled out of court in the midst of a media uproar. |

NBA's play-in tournament begins |
| The NBA's regular season has ended and the playoffs are soon to begin, but first: The play-in tournament, which begins Tuesday. The play-in tournament is a series of winner-take-all games featuring the teams seeded 7-10 in the Eastern and Western conferences playing for the final two playoff spots. Tuesday's tournament matchups feature a pair of games between the seventh and eighth seeds in each conference. Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving and the Brooklyn Nets will host the Cleveland Cavaliers (7:30 p.m. ET, TNT) while the Los Angeles Clippers will travel to Minnesota to take on Karl-Anthony Towns, Anthony Edwards and the Timberwolves (9:30 p.m. ET, TNT). The winners of those games advance to the playoffs, while the losers will have to play an additional game Friday in hopes of moving on.
