The Daily Money: File those tax returns. The deadline is Monday.

Haven't filed your tax returns yet? The deadline is Monday, and failing to turn in tax returns and any money owed to IRS on time can bring penalties. ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌

The Daily Money

Sunday, April 17

This is it, dear Daily Money readers: the final edition of our tax season newsletter. It's Brett Molina back to help guide you toward the home stretch.

For most taxpayers, the deadline to file is April 18. Because of Patriots Day, if you live in Maine or Massachusetts, you have until April 19 to file.

There are many reasons why some taxpayers wait until the last minute, said Jo Willetts, director of tax resources at Jackson Hewitt.

Among them: uncertainty about timing after the tax deadlines were pushed back the last two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and worries about whether they'll owe money.

"The most common reason for waiting is people are afraid they're going to owe and they don't know how they're going to afford it, which is just an expensive mistake," said Willetts.

How expensive? It's a 5% penalty per month until you file your return, and a 0.5% monthly penalty if you have a balance due and don't pay on time.

"At the government level interest is compounded daily, so that balance grows pretty fast," said Willetts.

2022 tax guide: Key dates for filing and extensions, claiming credits and planning for refunds

E-file fix: IRS reject your e-file return? Zero might be the magic number.

So what can you do? Taxpayers can file an extension, which gives until Oct. 15 to submit your return. However, you still need to pay at least 90% of what you think you owe by the April deadline.

Taxpayers who worry about affording a big IRS bill have options such as setting up a payment plan or borrowing money through a personal loan to help pay.

Bottom line: You're better off filing now and paying what you can than being late.

Your weekend tax break

Guess what? Tax season is almost over. It's time to celebrate. Maybe throw yourself a party like Elon Musk's recent "Cyber Rodeo" celebration with music, robots, and a petting zoo. OK, maybe that's too far.

As always, thanks for reading.
