Infant formula shortage: Safe substitutes, what to avoid

Amid an ongoing infant formula shortage, parents in need are scrambling for alternatives as retailers ration what little supplies they have.

If your usual baby formula has become unavailable, your first move should be to consult your own pediatrician the best options for your child. Your doctor may have samples of other brands available or be able to recommend some.

Pasteurized breastmilk from donation banks is another resource. It's also important to recognize the difference between getting milk through an accredited bank and informal breastmilk sharing. Informal breastmilk sharing is not usually recommended – as there can be health and safety risks, according to the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine.

Two things you should never do: dilute formula or try a homemade recipe.

Texas law against Facebook, Twitter and YouTube to take effect for now

A federal appeals court ruling has cleared the way for a controversial Texas law that will allow any state resident banned from social media platforms for their political views to sue.

The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Wednesday put on hold a temporary injunction that a federal judge issued in December.  The law will take effect while judges weigh an appeal to the lower court decision.

Two trade groups representing Facebook parent Meta Platforms, Alphabet's Google and Twitter have sued Texas over the law which was motivated by the social media suspensions of former President Donald Trump after the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol and the prevailing belief among some conservatives that the companies censor right-wing views.  Social media companies say they don't target conservatives, only harmful content such as hate speech and extremism that violates their rules.

On Tuesday, Elon Musk, who has a deal in place to buy Twitter, said he would reverse that platform's permanent ban on Trump.

Given the political battles over Disney and social media, this lyric from Arcade Fire's "Culture War" seems apropos today.

"We're soldiers now in the culture war.  We're soldiers now, but we don't know what it's for."
