Good morning, friends of The Short List! It's John, here again with some of the best reads of the week from the USA TODAY NETWORK. I'm excited about today's offerings, so let's get right to it: |
🔵1 million COVID deaths: With the U.S. set to mark the tragic milestone of 1 million COVID deaths, USA TODAY's Dennis Wagner had the unenviable assignment of giving context to the deadliest event in American history . Consider this: "If you count all U.S. combatant fatalities in every war since the nation's founding – the Revolution, Civil War, two world wars, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan and others – the total is not close." |
Wagner delivered some stark statistics, but he also poignantly paid tribute to COVID's victims, looked back at the flawed efforts to contain the virus and considered what will be the pandemic's legacy. As history professor Carol Symes put it: "As awful as it is to live through a period like this, it will always end. And history will emerge with something better." |
💰'Ship of Gold': Who doesn't love a good shipwreck story? USA TODAY's Amanda Lee Myers recounted the incredible tale of the steamship Central America, which sank in 1858 off the Carolina coast laden with California gold rush booty. In 1988, the wreck and the treasure were found by explorer Tommy Thompson, but the claim was challenged in court. Thompson's company eventually sold gold bars and coins totaling about $50 million, but the investors who paid to fund Thompson's dream of finding the ship never saw the returns, and they sued in 2005. To make a long story short, Thompson has been behind bars for six years for contempt of court as he refuses to answer questions about the whereabouts of 500 gold coins. |
🏌️'We've all made mistakes': USA TODAY sports columnist Christine Brennan teed off on Greg Norman for his comment about the Saudi government's 2018 murder and dismemberment of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. "A long time ago, Greg Norman was a very good golfer with a flashy nickname who was best known for losing major tournaments in the worst way possible," Brennan wrote. "Today, he is something else entirely: the despicable epitome of unabashed greed, a man apparently with neither soul nor conscience who just uttered one of the most reprehensible sentences ever heard in the world of sports." |
