Passengers on missing sub believed to be dead |
Search and rescue teams early Thursday found outer parts of the Titan, a 22-foot submersible holding five men on a mission to explore the wreckage of the Titanic. OceanGate, the company that led the mission, said the five are dead. "We grieve the loss of life,'' the company wrote. The debris found on the ocean floor was "consistent with catastrophic loss of the pressure chamber" in the submersible, said Rear Adm. John Mauger of the U.S. Coast Guard. The passengers in the submersible were OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, British billionaire explorer Hamish Harding, French maritime and Titanic expert Paul-Henry Nargeolet, and a father and son from one of Pakistan's most prominent families, Shahzada Dawood and Suleman Dawood. |
Four people dead after tornadoes hit north Texas |
Officials were assessing damage Thursday and working to recover after a tornado killed at least four people in the north Texas town of Matador amid a brutal heat wave. A line of severe storms produced what a local fire department called an "unprecedented tornado" that ripped through the town. Meteorologists said the storm system caused an unusual combination of tornadoes, hurricane-force winds topping 100 mph and large hail. The National Weather Service continues to warn of a dangerously intense heat wave that has been settling over much of the state for days on end. | Pat Smith looks through his restaurant, Matador Diner, after a tornado, Thursday, June 22, 2023, in Matador, Texas. The 19-year-old French sensation has an impressive skill set — a guard's game in a big man's body and a big man's game in a 7-4 frame. He's athletic, can handle the basketball, shoot it and pass, and he has great footwork and shot-blocking ability.
