Nikki Haley's supporters brace for nail-biter against Donald Trump |
New Hampshire's long-celebrated, first-in-the-nation primary could have the last word on the 2024 Republican nomination battle. Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley is betting everything on winning, or at least coming in a close second, against former President Donald Trump. |
Despite mounting criminal charges and fierce opposition from old-guard Republicans, Trump has built a formidable lead in a race that has boiled down to a one-on-one contest. |
• | The odds aren't in Haley's favor. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis' exit may bolster Trump's lead. Nearly 60% of the Florida governor's likely voters said Trump was their second choice in the poll. | • | Since his win last week in the Iowa caucuses, Trump has made it clear that he believes a "big resounding" win in New Hampshire should force opponents to concede the entire GOP race. | • | Another factor that sets this year apart: President Joe Biden won't even appear on the ballot. The Democratic Party tried to push New Hampshire later on the primary schedule and make South Carolina the nation's first contest, switching up the traditional schedule for voters. | |

US, Britain launch second major attack on Iranian-backed Houthis in Yemen | The United States and Great Britain launched joint attacks on Iranian-backed Houthis in Yemen, the latest in a series of strikes intended to limit the militants' ability to attack international shipping lanes in the Red Sea. It is the second time the two allies have conducted coordinated retaliatory strikes on the rebels' missile launching capabilities. The U.S.-led attacks have degraded the Houthis' ability to target shipping lanes, an official said. The Houthis have launched more than 30 attacks on international shipping since November and have continued to do so since Jan. 11. The attacks, they maintain, are in response to Israel's invasion of Gaza. Read more |
Biden boosts abortion, contraception access on Roe v. Wade anniversary | President Joe Biden is taking steps to expand access to abortion medication and contraception, the latest moves by his administration to counter a wave of state abortion bans while he makes reproductive rights a centerpiece of his reelection bid. The new actions include expanding coverage for no-cost contraception and rolling out a plan to educate patients about the administration's position that they are entitled to care for pregnancy-related emergences − including abortion care in some cases. The steps coincide with the 51st anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the landmark decision that provided a constitutional right to an abortion for five decades. Supreme Court says feds can remove razor wire barriers in Texas | The Supreme Court allowed the Biden administration to remove razor wire barriers that Texas erected along a 29-mile stretch of the Rio Grande meant to block migrants at the southwest border. The 5-4 ruling gives the federal government the upper hand in its broader fight with Texas over the situation at the border – an issue Biden's Republican challengers have been hammering on the campaign trail. The Justice Department told the Supreme Court this month that additional barriers the state erected effectively prevented the Border Patrol from determining if a migrant in that area needs emergency aid. Who we think will get Oscar nominations this year | The field for the 96th Academy Awards will be unveiled Tuesday morning and we'll see if Christopher Nolan's atomic bomb biopic "Oppenheimer" keeps steamrolling or if multiple nominations will go to Greta Gerwig's pop-culture confection, "Barbie." And don't forget about the fantastical dark comedy "Poor Things" or Martin Scorsese's Western crime epic "Killers of the Flower Moon," both of which could score a number of nods. The biggest question: Will the projected nominees get their spot, or will Academy voters choose chaos? |
