Elvis' Graceland home in Memphis is facing foreclosure – but his granddaughter says it's fraud. The defense rested its case in Donald Trump's hush money trial with no testimony from Trump. And millions of people are at risk for tornadoes in the central U.S. |
👋Hey, there! Laura Davis here. It's Tuesday. Ready for the news? Let's go. |
Graceland up for sale? Not so fast. |
Elvis Presley's iconic Graceland home may be put up for public auction, but the rock legend's granddaughter Riley Keough is fighting the sale and has filed a lawsuit claiming fraud. |
How did we get here? A notice of foreclosure sale posted earlier this month by an investment and lending company claims Lisa Marie Presley, Elvis' daughter who died last year, owed $3.8 million after failing to pay back a loan, and Graceland was used as collateral. The public auction was scheduled for Thursday, but has been put on hold after a temporary restraining order was granted. Keough, who inherited the estate after Lisa Marie's death, has filed a lawsuit to stop the sale. The rock 'n' roll legend and numerous members of his family are buried in the home's Meditation Garden. 🎶 What we know about the dispute. | Elvis Presley poses in front of his Graceland home with his Rolls Royce in October 1960. Defense rests in Trump hush money trial |
The defense has rested after calling just two witnesses in former President Donald Trump's criminal hush money trial. |
It's a no for Trump: After initially saying he would testify, Trump subsequently backed out, claiming he couldn't because of a gag order restricting potentially intimidating attacks on witnesses and jurors – even though Judge Juan Merchan made it clear that this didn't preclude Trump from testifying. |
What's next? Lawyers for both sides are now making arguments over a vital part of the case: the judge's instructions to the jury. Closing arguments are set for May 28, Merchan has said, with jury deliberations to follow next week. 👉 See more from inside and outside the courtroom. | In this courtroom sketch, Judge Juan Merchan scolds witness Robert Costello as he momentarily clears the courtroom during former President Donald Trump's criminal trial in New York City on May 20, 2024. Severe weather threat fires up again |
Hunker down, y'all. Strong storms were forecast to pummel the Plains and Midwest on Tuesday as a severe weather pattern threatened to keep a large chunk of the nation in its grip through much of this week. |
What's the forecast? More than 25 million people from Nebraska to Michigan live in the path of a powerful storm system and face a "probable" threat of tornadoes as well as heavy rain, hail and damaging winds, the National Weather Service said. A tornado watch was issued Tuesday afternoon for much of eastern Nebraska and most of Iowa, along with portions of Illinois, Wisconsin and Minnesota. ⛈️ Here's the full forecast. | Storm damage is seen in Oklahoma City, Monday, May 20, 2024 after a possible tornado came through the area on Sunday evening. Will rent increases in swing states spell trouble for Biden? | Economic issues have long worried American voters, but as housing costs continue to be the biggest driver of core inflation, renters are feeling more and more disillusioned with politicians. Many positive indicators of how the economy is doing – such as unemployment numbers and lowering inflation – haven't brought much solace to households dealing with high rents. In some swing states, which are critical to President Joe Biden's reelection bid, rental costs have more than doubled in the past four years. |
The cost of shelter, which is basically based on rent prices, was up 5.5% in April compared to a year ago. "The rent is too damn high," said Tenant Union Federation Director Tara Raghuveer. 🔎 Take a closer look at where rent is highest. | | | | Israel urged "nations of the civilized world" to reject arrest warrants for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. | | | | | Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg said he has "questions" about the lack of body camera footage during the arrest of golfer Scottie Scheffler. | | | | Daniel Stern, everyone's favorite bumbling burglar in "Home Alone," has chronicled his decades-spanning career in memoir "Home and Alone," out now. | | | | Former All-American Austin Maddox had to be tackled by six officers during his arrest in Operation Valiant Knights targeting men who prey on children. | | | | Jennifer Garner shared the emotional moment she watched her oldest child with Ben Affleck graduate. | | | | Police carried out a second search of the home of Rex Heuermann in Massapequa Park, on the south shore of Long Island. | | | | The Demi Moore-starred body horror film "The Substance" premiered at Cannes to an extended standing ovation. | | | | The last words I spoke to George Lukacs were sincere but woefully delayed: 'Thank you, thank you, thank you.' | | | | The bear was found dead in Foresthill in Placer County after someone reported hitting it with a vehicle.
