Sparks flew in the courtroom and the prosecution rested its case in Donald Trump's hush money trial. Iran's president was killed in a helicopter crash. And WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange won an appeal to fight extradition to the United States.

👋Hey, Monday! Laura Davis here with the news. Let's get this show on the road!

But first: Weird critter alert! 👀 A rare deep-sea creature with alien-like features washed up on an Oregon beach.

Prosecution rests in Trump trial

The prosecution rested its case in Donald Trump's historic hush money trial on Monday. The defense then began to call witnesses, with no definitive word on whether Trump will testify.

"Are you staring me down right now?": A furious Judge Juan Merchan at one point cleared his courtroom of jurors, spectators and the press to chastise Robert Costello, a key defense witness for Trump, after Costello muttered "Geez!" from the stand about the judge's rulings.

What else was said: Prosecutor Susan Hoffinger asked star witness and former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen to clarify that he did not have a retainer agreement with Trump – a crucial part of the case, since Trump has described his payments to Cohen as a retainer for legal services, rather than reimbursement for a hush money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels. 👉 Everything that happened in court today.

Biden campaign says Trump froze during speech. Trump said his pause was intentional.

Iran's president killed in helicopter crash

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian and other officials were killed in a helicopter crash in mountainous terrain near the Azerbaijan border, officials and state media announced Monday.

What happened? Raisi, 63, and Amirabdollahian, 60, were traveling in a convoy of three helicopters from Iran's border with Azerbaijan in the country's mountainous northwest after inaugurating a joint dam project. The helicopter went down in heavy fog in a remote area Sunday, and search operations were hindered by the fog, blizzard conditions and difficult terrain. The bodies of all eight on board were found Monday. 👉 Here's everything we know.

Assange wins US extradition appeal

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange won the right to challenge a British court's decision to extradite him to the U.S. to face espionage charges, extending a yearslong legal battle that pitted U.S. and British authorities against the Australian national and free speech campaigners. The U.K. High Court's decision on Monday means Assange will have another chance to try to halt being transferred to the U.S. to stand trial for disclosing American military secrets. International court seeks arrest warrants against Netanyahu, Hamas leader

The International Criminal Court on Monday requested arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar and others on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity for the Israeli-led war in Gaza and the Oct. 7 attack in Israel. Criminal Court prosecutor Karim Khan said he had requested arrest warrants for Sinwar, Mohammed Deif and Ismail Haniyeh of Hamas, and Israel's defense minister, Yoav Gallant. The charges targeting Israel could ignite further international outrage over that nation's conduct during its war in Gaza, delivering a major setback to Netanyahu. 👉 Here's how they responded.
