Hurricane Milton brings tornadoes to Florida ahead of its expected landfall Wednesday night. Tim Walz says the Electoral College "needs to go." And a Rat Pack-era icon falls on the Las Vegas Strip. |
👋 Greetings, it's Julius. Let's get into Wednesday's news, shall we? |
Tornadoes swirl in Florida ahead of Milton's arrival | Hurricane Milton continued its path toward one of Florida's most densely populated areas as a "catastrophic" behemoth that is expected to make landfall Wednesday night. Milton's sustained winds have tapered off somewhat, but it has grown in size, making its potential damage more widespread. "Historic, catastrophic, life-threatening – all those words summarize the situation," said Austen Flannery, a forecaster with the National Weather Service. Tornadic supercells − dangerous, rotating thunderstorms that can produce tornadoes − were beginning to sweep across the Florida peninsula, the weather service said. The weather service in Miami said it had "up to 4 visually confirmed tornadoes today," with unofficial reports of others. 👉 Get live updates on Milton as landfall nears. | Nolan Salter walks into the rain and wind of Hurricane Milton in otherwise empty downtown Tampa, Fla., on Thursday. Walz: 'Electoral College needs to go' | Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Walz endorsed abolishing the Electoral College during a Kamala Harris fundraiser Tuesday, prompting his own campaign to distance itself from his comments. "I think all of us know, the Electoral College needs to go. We need a national popular vote," Walz said. The Harris campaign later said eliminating the system is not its official position. The Electoral College has skewed toward Republicans' favor in recent decades: Democrats have won the popular vote in seven of the last eight presidential elections, but in two of those cases lost the Electoral College. 🗳 What Walz said, and why the Electoral College is controversial. | Democratic vice presidential candidate Minnesota Gov. The end of an era in Vegas | The Tropicana hotel stood on the Las Vegas Strip for nearly 70 years, but it took less than 30 seconds to bring it down. Early Wednesday morning, the hotel-casino, which debuted in 1957, was imploded. Nicknamed the "Tiffany of the Strip" for its grandeur, the resort made a name for itself through its entertainment, showcasing the long-lasting showgirl revue Folies Bergere and big-name performers like Louis Armstrong. The demolition opens up space on the Strip for a new Major League Baseball stadium for the Athletics, formerly of Oakland, California. 💥 Learn more. | The Tropicana Las Vegas was demolished in spectacular fashion early morning Wednesday.
