USA TODAY sits down with VP Vance | After the Trump administration crossed its seven-month mark, Vice President JD Vance sat down for an exclusive interview with USA TODAY White House reporter Francesca Chambers. The two discussed issues including the National Guard deployment in Washington, DC, and other cities, his regrets about the February meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and the newly engaged Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce. |
Full coverage of USA TODAY's exclusive interview with Vance will be published on usatoday.com in the coming days. Here are a few highlights from the interview: |
National Guard in cities: As Trump threatens to send the National Guard to other major cities in addition to Washington, DC, the plan wouldn't be to keep troops deployed in these places permanently, Vance said. How long they stay in cities would depend on the success in reducing crime. "We don't want, indefinitely, to put national guardsmen on the streets of our cities. We just want to make those streets more safe," Vance said. |
The Federal Reserve shakeup: Vance said it would be "preposterous" if Trump couldn't fire Lisa Cook from the Federal Reserve. Trump earlier this week said he was firing Cook due to alleged mortgage fraud, but Cook has said he does not have the authority to remove her and plans to file a lawsuit against the president. Cook hasn't been charged criminally. Vance said Trump "does have the legal right to fire her." | Vice President JD Vance speaks with USA TODAY White House Correspondent Francesca Chambers in Washington, D.C., on August 27, 2025. Jack Gruber, USA TODAY | Two children were killed Wednesday and at least 17 people were injured when a shooter fired through the windows of a Minneapolis Catholic church toward young people worshipping at Mass, authorities said. The shooting occurred at Annunciation Church, which also houses a school. The two children killed were ages 8 and 10. Fourteen of the 17 injured were children. Two children are in critical condition. The shooter died of a self-inflicted wound at the rear of the church. |
Trump's response: Trump ordered all flags on government property to be flown at half-staff as "a mark of respect for the victims of the senseless acts of violence perpetrated," the White House said on X. The latest on the shooting. | Next on the federal takeover of Washington, DC: Union Station. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said Wednesday that his agency will put Washington Union Station back under federal authority as part of Trump's campaign to reduce crime. The Department of Transportation, which already owns Union Station, is renegotiating a cooperative agreement with the nonprofit Union Station Redevelopment Corp. and Amtrak, which leases the station.
