👋🏼 Hello! I'm Phaedra Trethan, bracing for a cold week ahead and scraping bits of freezing rain off my windshield. ❄️ 🌬️ 🥶

'A surge in fear' for U.S. Afghans

Afghans in the U.S. are fearful and anxious, worried that the horrific actions of one of their own will define their entire community. Since the shooting last week of two National Guard troops in Washington, D.C., that killed one Guard member and critically wounded another, by an Afghan national, there have been changes to national policy, political fallout and a lot of blame and fear.

The investigation: Suspected shooter charged with murder.
Good news: Critically injured National Guard member showing signs of improvement.

'Bright, loved and promising' lives cut short in California

The victims of a Sunday mass shooting were remembered Monday at a vigil in California. Shots rang out at a child's birthday party just outside Stockton, killing four and wounding 11. Among the dead: three children, ages 8, 9, and 14, and a 21-year-old.

Amari Peterson, 14, was remembered by his family as a "bright, loved, and promising young soul whose life was taken far too soon by a senseless act of violence," according to a GoFundMe page.
