This is America

Stories of justice and action across America

Fri Dec 5 2025

President Donald Trump is once again picking a fight with a group of immigrants by spotlighting an alarming local report as a means to justify a further crackdown on migration into the U.S.

This time it is Somali immigrants in Minnesota, who the president called "garbage" based upon a brazen federal fraud case that alleges dozens of people originally from the east African nation stole up to $1 billion in taxpayer money from a COVID-19 government program setup to feed hungry children.

"I don't want them in my country," Trump said. "Their country is no good for a reason. Their country stinks."

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz say he welcomes support for the ongoing investigation and prosecuting instances of fraud, but he and other elected leaders are pushing back on Trump's anti-immigrant language as federal law enforcement prepares to bombard the state with ICE raids.

"Our immigrant neighbors strengthen our nation—regardless of where they're from," St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter said at a Dec. 2 press conference.

"Our Somali community is no exception. Targeting people based on background isn't leadership. When the President responds with division and racism, it's un-American and against everything we stand for."

In every campaign since he first ran for president in 2016, Trump has called out Minnesota's Somali community to tout his mass deportation plans, including a pause on immigration applications from 19 countries in response to a deadly attack on two National Guard members in Washington, D.C. by a suspected shooter of Afghan nationality.

For more on what's happening with Trump's travel ban and immigration crackdown, check out USA TODAY's coverage:

2 million undocumented immigrants left under Trump, Kristi Noem says: The push to reduce illegal immigration is a top priority for Trump and ICE has hired 10,000 officers this year to help

Somali community alarmed by ICE operations and President Trump's comments: ICE operations are targeting Somali immigrants in the Twin Cities just days after President Donald Trump described Somalis as "garbage."

What 19 countries, first on travel ban list, now on immigration pause? The proclamation listed 12 countries whose nationals faced a full travel ban and another seven whose nationals were under a partial travel ban. Here they are.

Hegseth weathers more controversy as scandals mount

U.S Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth is attracting more headlines for the Trump administration.

For starters a Pentagon watchdog found he risked the safety of U.S. troops and their mission when it was revealed he discussed a covert military operation in Yemen over the commercial messaging app Signal. Using a personal device violated policy, the report said, but the watchdog maintained the defense secretary had the power to declassify the information he shared with other including a journalist who was in the group chat.

Hegseth also remains under the microscope from Democratic and Republican lawmakers for his role in authorizing a deadly strike on a suspected drug boat in the Caribbean that reportedly killed two survivors. The president remained steadfast in his support of Hegseth at the administration's final cabinet meeting of the year that was held this week at the White House.

A Navy admiral told members of Congress there wasn't any order from Hegseth to "kill them all" as was reported by the Washington Post, but at least one lawmaker briefed on the matter said he was deeply concerned by video of the Sept. 2 strike.

"What I saw in that room was one of the most troubling things I've seen in my time in public service," Rep. Jim Himes, D-Conn., who serves as the ranking member on the House Intelligence Committee, told reporters on Dec. 4.

"You have two individuals in clear distress without any means of locomotion, with a destroyed vessel who were killed by the United States."
